Satnav is the devil!! Can't believe the amount of people who rely on it 100% - we don't have one (MIGHT get one, as can see they are brilliant in a city you don't know - or might carry on borrowing one for those rare forays ...), and even if we did, I would still have a paper map in the car as well. I like to know where I am going in relation to other places, plus I like maps anyway.

Mine are only cheap primark ones but are amazing.

  • Fortunately we don't have a bat-nav. I maintain that OH would fuse it with his love of detours - "I said turn RIGHT! No, RIGHT you fool!" - and so we've stuck to paper maps in the car. Like the idea of laminating the key bits.

We have been fairly smugly settled during the snow. The only thing we haven't got in copious quantities is washing powder - definitely one for my "doh!" list, but we'll manage until we can get out easily. If necessary, it's about a 5 minute slither to the nearest shop, which is likely to be stocked still.

We may have to dig out on Monday, as MIL's loo seat is collapsing, and there is no one nearer to help. Apart from about 300 metres at each end, it's all A roads, so I'm happy to give it a go. Will remember to stock up the car accordingly.

Thanks for the recommendation on those heat holder socks. I definitely need some of those - my toes are decidedly chilly, and I've been wrapping my feet in a fleece blanket at night to get them warm enough for me to go to sleep. And that's with the house really toasty! :o

Just got a batch proving. At the mo I'm experimenting. I read somewhere you should handle the dough as little as possible so you don't knead it and should aim at no more than 4 minutes for the mixing (I don't use a bread maker).
It's always going to be denser than white bread but omg what a delicious nutty flavour when toasted.
If it goes belly up, I can always use it as rocks for self defence! :rotfl:

perhaps also as building material, you could built a shelter with it or something, left over porridge sets like concrete so you could use that for the mortar between your spelt 'bricks' :p

all's quiet on the eastern front today, it's a greyish day but the sunlight is bouncing off the snow so it feels reasonably bright. forcast says more snow tonight and from the looks of the sky i'm inclined to agree

my daughter is out playing in the snow with her dad, she'll be glad of that soup i made when she gets home later this afternoon. she was supposed to be with me today but wanted to play with him at the park, when i suggested that she just stay with him another night she said 'no mum, i want to come home to you because you always do all the right things to make me toasty and warm after i've been out in the snow' aww bless :D

The woman at the end has form for venturing out in her car when the rest of us are playing safe. She invariably comes to grief then plays the little woman expecting the usual 'good neighbours' to come to her rescue.
I saw her slithering past this morning and promptly closed my Hilda Ogden nets.

Oh good grief! Two of my more clueless friends are squawking on FB about having run out of food & fuel; both live in "delightful" rural cottages & commute to work & are furious to find their windy little lanes haven't been gritted. Again... They were happy enough to have a "snow day" yesterday (both are teachers) but not so happy to be denied their "recreational" trip to the supermarket today.

If you want to live in glorious seclusion, surrounded by "wildife" (i.e. things your financier hubby likes to shoot, under other circumstances) you have to be prepared!
