You need to keep your home at 18 degree's at least. I use an age concern free thermometer to check as its dangerous if lower. In fact it says 'below 16 degree's there is a risk of you suffering from hypothermia, heart attack or stroke. Take action now and turn your heating up AND put on extra clothes' Some people do not have decent heating but you do and should now be using it Pops. Im sure you will be receiving the £25 payment for it being so cold so that will pay for a good few days heating. We got a payment last week so have the fire lit as Oh is really feeling the cold.

Im so glad I invested money in my edibles, this is exactly the SHTF scenario that I was prepping for. Apart from picking DGs up tomorrow (2 miles away by car at the most) I have no need or desire to go anywhere. I will be crafting late into the night making lots of wee gifties for a special friend who is sitting, as I write, by her MIL's bed in hospital watching her drift away. I know she is sat crocheting and talking to her MIL about lovely times past.

I daren't put the full heating on apart from a couple of hours to shower/wash up/take the edge off (down to last gas bottle, so much for prepping!).
    BUT
I am holed up in living room with blankets and a plug in heater, it's not too bad, and I am eating more to produce my own heat. Please, if anyone has to "ration" heating, make sure you're getting enough high energy food. This is not the time to dodge butter on your jacket spud :)

I'm also regretting not picking up a proper snow shovel - I have a spade I could use but it's small and the edge will get ruined :(

Can I put in a few pleas?

    1. If you are in a cold house, wear lots of thin layers. This is much more effective than a couple of thick layers as it traps layers of air. Personally I recommend a skin tight vest as this traps the warmest iar next to your body. An old t-shirt that is too tight will work. Wool and fleece are good too.

    2. The old fashioned water bottle is great for localised heating, in bed and when you are tucked up in the day time. You can use the still warm water afterwards, even if only for washing. Cheaper than a heater.

    3. MOVE. The stationary body gets increasingly cold at the extremities, which inclines us to huddle up even more and then we get even colder and risk blood clots etc. Get up and move around as fast as you can for a few minutes to get your circulation going.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing

    I've been Money Tipped!
Son and family are safely in the new flat!:j They managed 2 trips in the van and then had to give up, heavily loaded large van on a snow laden hill not a good idea! Most of the stuff is moved just a few little bits left and they have the key to the old flat until next week so can pick up all else later on.

We had hoped to join them later today to help assemble everything and unpack but not a great idea in this weather, such a shame as today is ds birthday! Hopefully we can get to see them all next week?

dd and her dh were helping but dd fell on the ice and has hurt her back poor girl :( I have told her to get it checked out, hopefully she will. I believe they have managed to struggle out to the pub for a much needed drink and lunch!

The new flat is already much warmer than the old one, proper insulation and double glazing helps, also a new boiler heating system so we are all much relieved. Not a lot of snow here so far, just a dusting but it is starting to get very cold. So glad we have plenty of warm clothes and throws, a chicken casserole and dumplings in the oven, glass of wine and a warm, insulated house. Thank you for helping me prep for such conditions! Great advice on here!

    Stay warm and safe everyone!

7am..no snow. 7:50am..snow blowing horizontally & laying thick & fast

I was hoping No1 Offspring would be sent home as it's outside work, but I've heard nothing even tho the blizzard-like conditions worsened up to about an hour ago. I'm pretty sure I heard rain on the window so I'll be biting on my finger stumps til I get the signal they're all home safe (I ran out of fingernails about a week ago :D )

Muvva is an annoyance  She moans about getting the groceries upstairs after we've been shopping, but also complains when we have had a delivery that "there's far too much food in the larder & we'll never eat it all before it goes out of date!" I guess it's one of the drawbacks of living three floors up & no lift, but the benefits--IMO--far outweigh the niggles; the views, warmth rising from downstairs, less worry of intruders, etc etc, so please...just don't tell her the dinner she enjoyed today was based on a tin of soup that was 18mths ood

    HI all

GQ I smiled at "Ach well, I'm old enough and sarky enough to just roll with it" its exactly how ive felt all week at work, I'm convinced "stupid" is spreading just like the flu virus:rotfl:.

Well i am no longer an Appr. foodie virgin, had the excitement of unpacking lots of boxes and the bemusement of wondering why i thought I would use multiple packets of prunes!!
Hope you and your loved ones stay safe and cosy, i'm away to look up prune recipes:o
    Hugs WLL x
;) Prunes keep ya regular, don't they? I found a can on special last week and added it to the preps. Just in case of an emergency situation if the S won't hit the Pan. As for stupid, I'm convinced it is contagious. Stoning gritting lorries?! Fer cryin' out loud.

[QUOTE=Molly_my_10_month_old_kitten_is_watching_it_fall_on_window._She's_amazed.[/QUOTE]:D I love it when a kitten sees snow for the first time, they're so amazed it's comical.

:j Yes! This is so gonna be stolen. I am an edible investment banker, too; out and proud.

:D We have 4 inches of snow and not currently any more coming down since this morning but anything could happen and probably will. We're refilled the grit bins. Again. And again. I shall probably dream about the dadblasted grit bins.

SuperGran called me just before w*rk so I added a couple of items to her shopping list (salt and satsumas, life's little essentials). She's on Day 2 of her self-imposed house arrest and is a bit bored but not too well so thinks she's better off indoors.

Strictly speaking, I have no need to go out for the next 48 hours but will probably mosey to the library tomorrow as will get cabin fever if I stay in this shoebox all that time.

Bread is cooling and will be out of it's tins to finish off in a few minutes. I find it deeply-comforting to know where my next meal is coming from (under the bed, mostly :p). Can't imagine sleeping easy at night with as little food in as some people seem to keep.

2tonsils, OMG what a fright. You are a cool cucumber. Stay safe and don't stand on a treadmill in a thunderstorm.

Keep warm and well. Mum says the birds are going nuts for the peanuts and the fatballs and the sunflower seeds and emptying the feeders every few hours. Think of our feathered friends, please, they need lots of calories to keep warm though the night.

Just translated the tickertape on the Greek news and it said Germany, Austria, Serbia etc all have record snow now and they are closing roads and airports...Croatia had over 27 inches of snow LAST NIGHT!!!!! Apparently it may be heading our way but our forecast was 14 degrees cloud and sun tomorrow with force nine gales and minus four tomorrow night. At the moment I can still hear thunder and the wind howling so we may yet get more hailstones.....have just had a glass of honey and cinnamon tsipero (a clear very alcoholic spirit) and I feel much warmer, and I now have my fingerless gloves on. About to go upstairs to turn the electric blanket on and planning a lie in tomorrow morning. Someone asked if I buy the honey and cinnamon liqueur..yes I did but only so I could devise my own recipe by taste testing LOL

    Have a lovely weekend folksxxx

be my guest, i'm flattered :p

we now have about 2 inches of lying snow and just had about round 3 of hailstones smacking the windows. i suspect there will be more overnight, my daughter may finally get to go sledging!

i had to go into town today so i popped into lidl and stocked up on some things, cooked a gammon i picked up. i cut the fat off the edge and put it in the slow cooker with some cabbage, mushrooms and onion and topped it up with water. i'm so pleased with it, it is delicious soup!!! the ham wasn't too bad either, just the thing on a night like this

recently i decided that i HAD to do something about my weight but i finally feel 'ready' so it's making it so much easier. it has weighed on my mind (pun slightly intended) that i would be an incredible drain in some ways to my group of loved ones if i stay at the weight i am. i do have a lot of knowledge and skills they don't have but the weight loss will help take the pressure off my knees and thereby make me better able to help out if there is a serious long term shtf scenario.

in regards to that, i'm quite pleased with myself about the tasty soup as it's only a 1pt soup for my weight watchers. i decided to do the online deal and it's tracked in my top cash back so i'll get my money back in a month or two, anyway 3 months online works out to free in the end. it's helping a lot and i even managed two meals out in edinburgh yesterday and still didn't even manage to use up all my weekly and activity points i'd saved up from last week (i'm doing fri-thurs weeks) and i'm down 9lbs :T

in the long run this will help to get me eating smaller portions so rationing wouldn't be so hard should it ever become necessary. i'm not feeling deprived, i've rather altered my mindset from i can't have that to is it worth it. last night soda wasn't worth it but gelato at nando's WAS (mmmmmm too!) i'm hoping that i could apply this should i ever have to ration, is it worth it right this instance or can i wait. would i rather indulge now or spread things out knowing i may be hungry or hungrier later if i do. can't really know til it happens if it would work or not but if i'm already in a mindset to see even the small things as under my control for good or bad surely THAT has to be beneficial in many circumstances.

thanks for the reminder about the birds, tomorrow i'll dig out those fat balls i bought some months ago. i think i also have some lard that needs getting rid of and some butter that has been used so little that it smells slightly cheesy, i think they can have that too :D also my seeds and dried fruit drawer has stuff spilled in it, i'll press that into the lard/butter, what a feast, i'm sure they won't mind that it's not been in plastic!
