Muvva is an annoyanceShe moans about getting the groceries upstairs after we've been shopping, but also complains when we have had a delivery that "there's far too much food in the larder & we'll never eat it all before it goes out of date!" I guess it's one of the drawbacks of living three floors up & no lift, but the benefits--IMO--far outweigh the niggles; the views, warmth rising from downstairs, less worry of intruders, etc etc, so please...just don't tell her the dinner she enjoyed today was based on a tin of soup that was 18mths ood
I didn't know that tins of soup COULD go OOD
Still alive though, after all this time0 -
Hello all
Nice to see you all prepped and staying warm, I'm glad we have stocks in too.
Great points you've all made, love the 'edible investment', and opting in for that one.
Slightly interesting trip home in the car, 20 minute trip from 'burb to 'burb turned into a 3 hour one! Someone skidded their car right in front of me, only going 10mph and nearly went into on-going traffic... Anyways, I was well prepped with cunningly hidden stores, conveniently concealed in the blubber around my waist-line, which sustained me through my 3 hour trip.
And an apple which I hadn't eaten at lunch. Nearly dozing off from the heat of the car's hot air, so had to keep switching it off, then switch it back on when I couldn't see through the mist...
Note to self to have more in the car than an apple in my bag when bad weather forecast, no matter how short you think the trip is going to be! Although we were all allowed out 'early' it seemed like all employers had the same idea simemultaneously and the work places all emptied at the same time! Roads turned into a car park, with lots of angry beeping, people getting out of cars to look round, etc.
OH says I now have my all weather wings and can drive in anything... Humph! After a hot meal, hot tea, and medicinal chocolate, feeling the tension of being clenched at the wheel starting to melt away. 4 inches of the white stuff, school run, rush hour, and chaos. Now planning to hibernate over the week-end.
OH said the Ddog loved the snow, and was frisking about in it with great pleasure. No frisking for me, daren't get out the car for fear of road rage/abuse/major wind chill. Some poor b*ggers waiting at bus stops looked barely covered up. Would've let them in the car, but the bus was crawling along 2 cars behind me....
Lesson 7: equip the bl**dy car urgently! Don't be lulled into a false sense of security by the shortness of distance you travel, especially when the world and his dog all decide to travel at the same time....

thank goodness its not just me who 'buys food off myself' :rotfl: Oh knows Im crazy after all these years so barely flinches when I do my blonde moments ' now do I pay for this from my purse or from my other purse?' 'Dont eat that its out of the wrong cupboard'
I am that crazy old lady who looks a lot like her Mum and does things like her too but I will not give in and wear the old lady clothes that she continually trys to get me to buy. Re keeping warm I'm a 'pensioner' on a low income but unfortunately don't get the cold weather payment.
This is who qualifies http://www.dwp.gov.uk/publications/specialist-guides/technical-guidance/sb16-a-guide-to-the-social/cold-weather-payments/
Ironically in the autumn my house is colder than now - because I only have the stove on in the evenings. It often gets down to 16 in the day, maybe even 15 but I'm in and out and don't feel it. I certainly can't afford to have the house at recommended temperatures the entire day. At the mo it is around 18 during the day and 20 in the evening downstairs. If I'm feeling chilly I find a heavy blanket and a hot water bottle in the small of the back works wonders.:T
Anyway it's been snowing all evening here - it's a complete white out and the dog will have to make do with the garden for her end of day ablutions. I ain't going out there!0 -
Well it's snowed most of the night here. Thankfully we don't have to go out anywhere. :snow_grin:snow_grin
Having said that, our local council has done a great job of keeping the main roads completely cleared to the extent that they have been dry! :T My DH did not get finished from work until midnight last night, and although it had been snowing heavily for five hours the roads home were all clear.
They have understandably not cleared all of the housing streets but have placed large 'dumpy' bags of grit in and around the estates for the public to help themselves from. Many have cleared and gritted their own roads to a safe driving level.
They have also sent out an odd little path snow plough which has scraped the snow from all the main paths that people need to use, so walking has become easier as well.:)
It's not often I can see my Council Tax money working but this year I have to applaud them for their efforts.:TGive us the strength to encounter that which is to come, that we may be brave in peril, constant in tribulation, temparate in wrath, and in all changes of fortune, and down to the gates of death, loyal and loving to one another.”0 -

Good morning from the "red zone" also half way up a mountain on a hill farm!!!
I want to thank all users of this thread for my current relaxed, prepared and slightly smug state of mind!
I have taken so many hints and tips from this thread that now I feel totally prepared.
I have loads of milk, bread, loo rolls, fully stocked freezer (& generator!), store cupboard stocked right up, a gas range that runs on bottle gas, a log pile that fills the shed, loads of blankets, candles, wind up torches and an alternative water supply if it gets really bad!
My car has a "get home bag", wind up torch, space blankets, food, water, etc I also have an "every day carry" list that includes multi tools, matches, first aid, food, water etc
I have also invested in rucksacks that are packed ready to leave quickly if neccessary, I have backed up/copied documents and photos.
I even bought a survival tin the other day as it was reduced in our local camping shop!
Thank you all for the information and tips! I will keep reading & mainly lurking!

Deranged Hairy Limpet???????? Do you refer thus to the Prince of Belfast?????? Mine looks like a bald Pipe Cleaner even on a good day, when he was little the kids used to say to thier Mums 'That doggie is a skelington Mum' we just couldn't get him fattened up as he was so active. Glad you got your snow, sad it makes brown puddles on the floor, Cheers Lyn xxx.0
