Have a lovely break, 2tonsils, catch up with us when you return, please.

I've just charged the darling little portable radio off the USB cable from my pooter as there wasn't enough sun for it to keep charged on the windowsill. Anyone would think it was the shortest day or something, wouldn't they?:rotfl:

I have to say that I am very pleased with it thus far and sometimes listen to it instead of the stereo. When it's running off solar I get the warm glow of cheating the leccy companies. It's also nice to know that in a powercut I can light a candle and chill out with some toons or even the news.

Does anyone have experience of a wind-up charger for mobile phones? I'd like to be able to charge the Nokia HausBrik by an alternate method in case I had to manage communications in a protracted powercut.

Best wishes for all those who are travelling/ having guests travelling to meet them, and hoping that journeys are made safely and with minimum aggravations. GQ xx

Still something I hope to do get a wind up or chargeable radio...should be considering if I can find a DAB radio with such features...

Finding all I want to do is sleep at present what with little to do and the horrible weather outside. I'm determined to stay positive. I know in many ways I am fortunate and things could be worse.

I hope WTSHTF, as it will, come the New Year it is not as bad as feared for us all...

    Here you go

But the problem with DAB is it uses more power and therefore you get a lot less listening for a lot more winding!

    Thanks Pineapple...

It's going on the time sadly but I think with the present climate crime will increase, earlier this week presents stolen from GOSH meant for the children at Christmas. Here, a car was broken into and a power drill was taken...now on a much more personal level the BBC's economic reporter Robert Peston has tweeted that his late wife's rings have been stolen after a burglary a couple of nights ago.

    The future is scary.

As things get harder burglary always increases. Part of staying safe is being prepared.

The usual advice, keep doors and windows locked, check callers id. Leave a light and tv on when out, draw the curtains in the evening. Get to know your neighbours and look out for one another.

Other things you can do is keep it low key, don't flaunt wealth, dress down and blend in. Don't shop at lonely, quiet times. Stick to well lit busy streets, don't carry an expensive bag.

Nothing can make you immune to crime, but you can be as well prepared as possible.

In terms of crime the UK is reasonable, there are many countries where every window is barred and people have a cage fitted in the bedroom to sleep in. Take a look on google streetview at almost any street in Buenos Aires, all metal window bars, some very decorative, but still bars.

    Stay prepared, and safe.

    GQ,
I have a wind up radio. It's an orange short wave thing with rubbery casing and has an alarm with red flashing light and a torch. From Maplins. It also has a mobile recharger.

However, I couldn't tell you where the adapters are and in any case none of them fit my 6 year old Nokia (1110?) So I never tried it.

I do have a little battery operated recharger. It takes one AA battery, it's little longer than the battery itself. It has a little torch light at the top, like a pen torch.
I bought it from Maplins in a sale, under £5 I think.

One day a man came to repair the bathroom light and he used the torch bit and thought it was really good.

It has been really great for emergencies when I've had to go out at short notice with a run down phone.

No bling or wealth here Bluebag. At best some old CD's, charity clothes and second hand pc's. And some kitchen gadgets, that is about it!

But if they got in I suppose they could find something but nothing that I am really attached to or would miss.

  • Rain and a blocked head woke me up, yuk head colds are horrible. Anyway a walk around the house has helped as has a mug of my herb tea and I have just chewed my first ever clove of raw garlic. Yes I have known for 60 years how good garlic is, so I cook with it a lot but I also know that it is most potent when the `pungent odour` is released and I have been bracing myself to chew a raw clove for quite some time. I just did it and it is `sharp` like onion but not that awful. I`ll do anything really and I am going to chew a clove a day from now on, 365 cloves just for me to chew raw

I take lamberts garlic tabs, every day but I am going to phase them out and sub real neat garlic. Much more os and so much cheaper as well as effective and easy to grow. I`ll just have to double my production next year. Dad was right about garlic all those years ago

Hope you soon feel better. I have had raw garlic but I think some are stronger than others...I use it in cooking now but do use the capsules too...
