Pops - I was burgled once and they caught the guys in the house so knew exactly what they had intended to take. I don't think the police knew whether to feel more sorry for me having nothing worth stealing or the burglars getting caught when there was nothing worth them taking.

Kitty - better feed your DH garlic too :D can you get away with swallowing the cloves whole rather than chewing?

The Farming programme on Radio 4 has said that many Farmers are on the poverty line and during these difficult times they often drop paying their house insurance. And recently the authorities/charities that help out by often taking food with them and liase with food banks.

That shows how serious the situation is...
Wasn't it Maggie T & her lot who "encouraged" the UK farmers to let yield slide because of EU food mountains & subsidies? They also sold a good deal of their land for development, & look where THAT has got us  We're told as a *country (I use the * term to include North, South, West & across the waters :p ) to be more self-sufficient in growing edible crops to feed the many people on our little islands, but then let the Big Boys dictate price so sm shareholders are the only ones to gain anything from the process.

The government want the populus to take more responsibility for their health to reduce costs across the NHS Not an unreasonable statement...but!
When the food we can afford to buy is tasteless tat full of 'the wrong carbs' (white vs wholegrain) or 'fatty protein' (processed fish/poultry vs fresh) there has to be something fundamentally wrong with THEIR research on just how people have to live. I would love to have poached salmon with baby new potatoes & a green salad, with fresh fruit salad for pud; so I compromise & have frozen fish in breadcrumbs with boiled spud & frozzie veg, with tinned peach slices for pud. Hardly on the same page is it!!!

Insurance companies place incredible terms & conditions to their policies so I'm not surprised folk don't/can't renew them. And if you're claiming any kind of Benefit, insurances are way down the list of priority spending in their calculations, but won't help if something happens & you're not covered tearing-hair.gif

I reckon the twazzox who grant planning permission on flood plains should be forced to pay for damage personally--not the council they 'work' for--& they may be more careful to heed the knowledge of the local populus in future *folds arms defiantly* Perhaps the mps will donate the money they want to spend on a rail track no-one else wants, to the victims who can't get insurance because they live in an area that should never have been built on in the first place!

omg we are in for a lot more amber rain over the next few days and I wish we didn`t have to travel but ds and his oh are flying down so we need to travel to fetch them here, then we all need to travel two ways the next day, then back to the airport the day after. The thought is flipping scary as we have seen the effects after the rain has stopped and it causes deeper and deeper floods for several days. We`ll have a couple of pairs of wellies and sticks in the car but we might have to prepare to stop/turn around but we won`t go through anything too deep whatever

All roads around here were cut off at once, last time around, but it took a week for the last road to close so fingers crossed. One road is through a ford, so that is out already, one is along flat floodplains and it suddenly reaches a point when flood water on both sides covers the unmarked road, this road has very deep ditches on both sides as it is part of the county`s flood control, which also involves tidal waters

The last road has floods on a corner and I noticed today that the `selfish` farmer has cut a drain from his sloping field leading downwards onto that bad corner, grhhh. I say roads but two are single track lanes
Hope the gods are kind to you--& anyone who is travelling--but your post reminded me of a story on the local tv news. I know I shouldn't laugh evil-laugh-black-smiley-emoticon.gif but it does prove--yet again--that some folk have more money than sense...
A country road, barely wide enough for two way traffic; an aged red brick bridge across the top of the tv screen, steep woody banks either side of the road & puddle under it. Just visible is a car roof & two little waves where the windscreen washers were still working, & the voice-over man saying 'This driver was in a hurry to get their daughter to college.' They escaped through the car windows which should have added to the fun...it was a p0rsche smiley-says-lol.gif

Used to inhabit that part of the world and that piece of road is WELL KNOWN to flood. That after all is why there is a bliddy meter marker on the side!
I did giggle, especially as DS thinks she knows the [STRIKE]moron[/STRIKE] driver of said car and so last night in the pub there would be some really sarcastic comments I suspect. :D

A colleague was burgled after leaving her key in the lock in a glass paned back door. They simply broke the pane, reached in and let themselves in!
Fortunately I live in a low crime area. It helps being off road and having one lane in and out. That and having two of the nosiest neighbours ever on the way in/out. ;)
I'm probably more at risk through being careless with my bag or at the cash machine but I'm trying to be more aware. A charity shop told me a customer had her zipped up bag picked - the thief used a magnet to open it . So be aware...
It helps having lived in Africa a while where we had to be extra security conscious. I'm always aware if anyone seems to be shadowing me and will step aside to let them pass just to be on the safe side.
But there are so many scams.. The guy that repaired my freezer told me that one of his customers was conned by a woman (with child) who knocked on the door and asked if she could use the phone to get help as she had broken down. There followed a 'conversation with garage' and the woman left - no problem. It was only later that the householder discovered the woman had dialled an expensive premium rate number.

Same here, I always split it up. My daughters have money in their shoe when they go out on the lash. :rotfl:

I always leave some money at home for them too, so they can pay for a taxi when they get home if they get their bag nicked.
  • I'm glad the world didn't end yesterday, I've still got all my preparedness things and might just get to use them. I think it is still very sensible to make provision for an uncertain future, both financially and politically, and perhaps have a little spare to help out those who have not had the inclination to make provision for anything unforseen. It doesn't hurt anyone and gives me a little peace of mind.

So you haven't floated away yet Mrs LW????
  • No GREENBEE but I'm getting very good at mudsliding and walking through puddles on the end of a lead. The lurcher has developed a decided sense of humour these days and nothing makes him happier than taking me through the deepest puddles and the thickest mud he can find - then looks at me with that huge doggy grin as though to say "well wasn't that fun?" and I don't want to hurt his feelings by displaying anything but joy!!!!!!

Did you visit Wickham? I love the place and the shops and there are a very good farm shop and a farm butchery on the edge of the village which are quite the best I know of, Hope you are all ready for christmas and have a really lovely time, Cheers Lyn and Doc xxx.

I think we've got a prima donna of the canine world :doh:as Pup refuses to go out the back door for a widdle when it's raining; many a time one or other of us have been stood on the garden path holding the biggest umbrella, trying to 'encourage' the stubborn little tyke to come under the brolly with us :rotfl: My admiration for his bladder control is all that separates Pooch from interior & exterior living quarters :p

You also mention W1ckham..would that be the one in Hampsh1re, as you come off P0rtsdown Hill? It's got a nasty off-set crossroads with a steep dip under a railway bridge, & a gorgeous tea rooms in the little arcade with the most devine lick-lips.gif cheese scones...There's a kind of Arkwright iron-mongers that I'd spend hours mooching around, given half a chance :D
We used to go that way to visit relatives further inland, but sadly have no such need for the journey now & muvva finds the distance a trial to just go for "something to do" :o Our favourite bakers have long gone after taking over the post office so I daresay my reminiscences of a proper village square are now only that, as housing takes over the High Streets where we once used to shop.
