That one was on the same facebook page...the one I meant had a long line running all the way down the UK...all the way from top to bottom and he said it would stall for a while.

We have storms here but the place I am going away to on Saturday has sunny days, 8 degrees in the day and minus three at night...a big improvement on the torrential rain storms here!

Did anyone see Wartime Farm Christmas last night? OH seemed really surprised when I said about shortages where we lived during the miners strike. I watched with fond memories at Ruth and co making dolls house furniture and using the Chinese lanterns to make decorations as I'd seen my Gran and Mum do the same when I was young. The miners strike didn't just affect the miners but lots of other jobs too. We lived out in the country and had a coal seam near us so I was dispatched (with the dog for company) with a bucket and a hammer to fetch coal for the fire. I really think some of the skills they discussed last night are going to become common place again.

My dad was a miner unix and that's how I was brought up - to just get on with it and get by however you can. Mind your own business and keep out of trouble.

Because food was scarce (due to lack of money) we ate a lot of rabbit. Although being a small child I wasn't told this (I bawled my eyes out when I found out..... product of the Watership Down generation! :D). Mum grew a lot of veg and strawberries.

I don't think I had a particularly deprived upbringing - but my mother was, shall we say, 'careful'. I think it was partly down to the war but also her mother had come into a couple of tidy bequests and blown the lot on shoes and fur coats and left them penniless. Anyway we lived on the north east coast and on a weekend me and my father were despatched to gather what we called 'sea coal' that had washed up on shore.

Oh wow pineapple that takes me back! My lovely dad (in Fife) gathered it by the ton and saved it in sugar sacks in his back room for me when my kids were wee. I had the best fires in the village, was famous for it :)
