Kittie I Hope your DH manages to get home safely. When I was watching the videos of the floods the other day I was wondering how people in York knew where the road ended and the river began and I wondered the same with the floods in Venice. When I went to Venice I didn't see any barriers or warnings at the side of the canals and that was when there was no flooding. I don't think I would dare drive or walk there.

Following on from the news about the pensions/unemployment...I just read this on the Greek news site....blimey.....the money owed in pensions is just the tip of the iceberg...just look at this! Thankfully it's in English this time. Posting while we have got a lull in the lightning...hoping it clears enough for me to watch the film on Greek tv later...War of the Worlds is on!

I agree Fuddle, the ''real'' news barely gets a mention. I wondered why the Greek government weren't proclaiming the bailout deal loudly...it seems they might be keeping a low profile in case they get lynched when the truth comes out. I choose the news sites I read carefully as many of the tv stations and newspapers here are state owned and they would be the last place I go in search of the truth.

It means that I added the last comment whilst Fuddle was writing her's so when I posted my amended post she had already put a follow up but it wasn't there as I edited mine.

Fuddle had said that(I parody)that real news seems to be being ignored. That I believe is deliberate.
i know pops i was only making light of it you know me i didnt mean to start a whole thing...as i said i couldnt understand it thats all .............sorry xxxx

Butterfly, the awful thing is that the rain is forecast for another eight days at least... not sure when the finances are going to crash but we have been thinking that for the last three years.

2tonsils, how terrible that people will not have their money, Ive been there thanks to the DWP and its hell, (my main reason for prepping) and you slowly sink into an abyss the fallout of which lasts years.

DS built me a fire pit last weekend with a load of old bricks we had for a little wall but the pit will be much more use. its halfway down the garden but near enough to stick a pan and kettle on. i was really amazed with it. It has a wire mesh shelf to cook on and he used the old incinerator round it to make a windbreak. I have a stove top kettle (pink-euch) and a red enamelled one which sits on my fake log burner in the living room. Im going to start collecting wood when I get the chance to wander and build a little wood stack for emergencies.

  • Good idea Ginny, have fun with cookouts and get used to using it before you have to do it by necessity! A girl can never have too much firewood.

:D Ooh, a fire pit. One of my pals has one of those and it's great.

You can never have too much wood and pre-placing it and allowing it to season will be nothing but a good thing.

Tomorrow the parental units will be visiting and when they go, they'll be taking a few bits and bobs of mine back to their home (not beside a river). I'm sending copies of documents esp stuff like my receipts of goods which I'd want to claim on in event of a total disaster such as a fire or flood, plus an A4 folder full of pages of archived negative strips. Which would mean I could re-print my precious pix if the originals got lost.

If you have custody of the only copy of a precious family photo or document, it may be possible to make a copy or copied and have them kept elsewhere by other family members.

When a family house was to be auctioned outside the family, we had an archive going back to the 1860s of documents relating to the land before the house was built and various other matters of historical interest. We didn't want them lost but we didn't want to keep them ourselves, so we offered them to the county record office who were pleased to take them. We figure if future owners of the house want to look for them (it's changed hands several times in the past few years) they can look them up.

Right, going to bobble off and alternate a few chores with some surfing of the interwebulator..........lots of stuff to read and lots of stuff to do at home. Decisions, decisions...........

Ginny the pit sounds great what a clever son you have. It'd be nice to hear how your experiments using it come out. I'm planning to do a lot more outdoor cooking this coming year too.

My new miniarettes arrived (another Gala and another Lord Derby cooking apple) from Ken Muirs so I'll be freezing my butt off this weekend re-arranging the new fruit garden.
I need to move loads of stuff but it'll make better use of our small space we have.
