Which paper was this, Bob?
According to the Telegraph, the Mail, the Sun and the Independent, (haven't looked at the Times ) Alain Juppe, the person thought most likely to take over the French Presidency from Francois Hollande, says it should move back across the Channel
Hollande currently says there is no reason to change the arrangement; but he won't be President after next Spring.0 -
Agreed Mrs L but mental preparation is also important. If we can see however dimly how things might pan out it can help us work out what sort of course to steer.
For instance I don't seriously expect civil unrest. However I see no signs of a Dunkirk spirit either.
In practical terms, if it looks as if there might well be a recession in a few months time then I'll adjust my spending accordingly and think carefully before committing to any big purchases. It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -
The prepping for whatever eventuality that might occur is only common sense, stirring up discontent and hatred at a time when there is more of that around than we actually need is not helpful to anyone. Politics are not what this thread is about, prepping IS.0

We don't do hatred on this thread. And I don't think anyone has said anything that could be said to be stirring it upIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0

Heated opinions and strong language, perhaps hatred is too strong a way of putting it. Really we should be looking to stand together through adversity, we're normally a cohesive and feet on the ground group, at the moment everyone is rattled and it's throwing us off course. Happier place is to concentrate on things concerning prepping for a way to be part of a better future, and doing it together in harmony.0

to be fair, I think the dunkirk spirit probably involved at least three types of person: #
1) those who were silently, stoically getting on with it
2) those who were jollying everyone along
2) and the vast majority of the rest muttering, complaining and grumbling but doing it anyway
it's the British way:AA/give up smoking (done)0 -
Three things are certain in this life. One...you are born. Two....you will die. And three....sooner or later, whatever your political leanings, you will get shafted in one way or another by the government of the day.
It makes sense to me to be as self sufficient as you can, within the confines of your personal circumstances. Eat as healthily as possible, avoid harmful habits, get enough sleep, learn the basics of keeping yourself and your family fit and well, try and get rid of debt or reduce it as much as possible, be careful with your money without being miserly, and appreciate the simple things in life. When you are content in your own skin, and at ease with your place on this earth, then you can handle whatever life throws at you.

Whilst the proles are indeed the majority, we don't stick together and vote for our own interests do we? new labour was born to win over the middle class mores because the Tories kept getting voted in, however horrific they were to the ordinary man-on-the-street. Why? - given the overwhelming numbers that in their own interests shouldn't have supported them??
shiny baubles and sleights of hand.
anyway thanks for the link.
The labour party came into being because the workers were getting organised and intellectual liberals thought they should provide leadership (which wasn't actually needed). New labour was a way of shifting UK politics to the right.
I've no idea whether it was the media or politicians who led the division of society and the targeting of groups and the othering that's become common place - whether its single parents, unemployed, disabled or migrants. Much of which is a distraction from the game playing at the other end of the economic spectrum.
What has this got to do with prepping, other than suggesting its actually worth trying to learn lessons from history? As GQ and Nargleblast suggest, looking in the less obvious places for the real news becomes even more important.I think rediscovering those values will be the salvation of a lot of people who are tempted to think what's the point. Because the corollary of cutting off a supply of cheap labour is that there won't be any excuse for people to simply opt out.
I know several business owners who are looking forward to being able to bring in cheaper labour from India and the Philippines as part of the EU exit, they also expect reductions in the minimum wage (and the abandonment of the "Living Wage") due to the need to make Britain more attractive to foreign businesses. I would have taken all this with a pinch of salt, except one predicted the announced cut in corporation tax and is something in the tory party.0
