Being veggie I'll pass on eating the messenger. I think I could live on blackberries and variations thereof for quite some time and probably should to clear a drawer in my freezer.SPC~12 ot 124

I was talking to someone today, who voted remain.
I asked him what made him vote remain.
His answer?
"I have a holiday home in France".0 -
Pavlova was (it's debated fiercely) invented for the ballerina Anna Pavlova in either Australia or New Zealand during one of her tours so not British but both countries were part of the Commonwealth at that time so I guess you could say they were close relations so it's got British connections!0

I'm finding it very easy to do a British-only menu. Especially with the wartime cookbooks. I have one Q though...
is pavlova British??? *prays*
I figure that if it's got Australian or New Zealand connections we can sneak it inI'm working on a 'can we grow/produce the ingredients here basis; and if we can then I'm allowing it. I'd make it with strawberries, gooseberry compote or raspberries though. Peach trees really don't do well this far north
No issues with eggs though, as friends keep chickens on one of the allotment hen pens and we swap our honey for their eggs.

I don't think for one minute NS is serious about being able to stop the UK Brexit. She's a lawyer and she knows exactly what the law says. She's just doing what many of us in here would love to do.... winding up the govt!

I'm frankly a bit depressed that none of our politicians seem to be able to rise to the occasion but are indulging themselves with partisan squabbling. We are losing valuable time. If we end up in recession it won't be because of Brexit per se but because of uncertainty and drift - and then people will suffer more hardship than they need have done. It's one thing to say there is a price worth paying and another to be profligateIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -
I often think of this thread, and now it would seem it is possible the .......has hit the fan I thought I would pop along and say hi!

I'm trying to educate myself as to what a shadow government does. We don't have this system.
Wow! Your politicos are all in an upheaval! (Corbin seems like a tough old bird. Won't go quietly into the night.)
It's amazing that Brexit won the day when both of your major parties were campaigning against it. ???
Democracy!! It can be a messy thing.
Who is Juncker? He seems to think he's in charge of how the EU functions. Am I wrong? (This is all new to me)Overprepare, then go with the flow.

The second largest party after an election are regarded as the Opposition, whose function is (in theory) to challenge and scrutinise the government. The shadow cabinet mirror the Government's cabinet, and whilst its the cabinet minister who puts forward government policy in that department, their shadow equivalents role is partly to challenge that policy, put forward the Opposition's policy and to hold the Government to account over how it has implemented its policies. Apart from the Opposition Leader and the Chief Whip and his deputy, shadow cabinet members aren't paid for the additional responsibilities. In theory its also a training ground ensuring the opposition gains additional experience which will hold it in good stead if its is elected in due course.

Perhaps democracy should be a messy thing. (though I'd prefer it to be far more honest than we've seen of late.

Jean-Claude Juncker is the President of the European Commission (the bureaucracy of the European Union). He is pretty much in charge of how the EU functions. The Commission proposes policy and legislation (its the only body which can propose legislation).0 -
Thank you nuatha! Very helpful to me as I try to follow the wonderfully insightful conversations here and a few other threads...some of which are quite hateful to each other and I quit reading.Overprepare, then go with the flow.
