I live around 10 miles from Brogdale and its great to visit when I go to see my sis-in-law who lives in Faversham. There is also a fabulous farm shop called Macknades just outside Faversham, and I'm afraid when I visit there I do tend to go a bit mad on the stuff they sell, as its so nice The veg is really good and local and their deli counter and cheese are to die for I stock up if I visit and they do some really inexpensive herbs and spices which come in cellophane bags and not silly fancy jars.I am so lucky to live in Kent and a half hour away is Whitstable and their amazing fresh fish market. :):):) non of the supermarket frozen months ago fish :):)

I've only been to Whitstable once, but I couldn't get over how cheap seasonal things like cobnuts were compared to here! Might manage to get down there again this week actually, as we're not needed to help with the grandchildren, if OH feels up to it.

It's starting to look as if Corbyn will be all right with a couple of folding chairs and a camping table for his cabinet

:( It seems that the news of the day is that our democratically-elected representatives are conspiring with foriegn nationals to overthrow the will of the people of the UK. Didn't this used to be called treason?

Apart from the overweening arrogance of it, in which world do they imagine that this will end well? At least 8 other EU member states have pressure for their own referenda. If our lot overturn ours, will they just subside peacefully or will there have to be riots across the continent?

If the eurocrats show a modicum of sense, a much reformed and much smaller EU may survive. If they act autocratically, they will be seen as autocrats, and it will end badly. Probably in the complete implosion of the EU and a lot of civil unrest in many countries.

I'm very disappointed by the level of stupidity.:(

I suppose one could look at the positive side of this - if our democratic will (clearly expressed in the Referendum) fails for any reason (be it Eurocrats, traitorous politicians of our own, people in our own country that dont believe in democracy, whatever else)

then the positive side is they might save money on having elections - any darn elections (General, Referendum, whatever....) as how many of us would bother turning up to vote if our vote was only going to get ignored anyway.

I've been dutifully thinking out who/what to vote for and trotting off to the polling station each time - but, if this gets subverted, then I dont honestly think I'll bother to go near a polling station ever again. What would be the point?

Let's hope it's not going to be a case of "Hotel California" (ie "You can check out any time you like - but you can never leave...").

I see Boris is still insisting we will both stay in the single market and have a points-based immigration system! Hmm.

I love it that the Czech foreign minister told Juncker it's all his fault because he's everything so many of us voted against:j

I wish people would stop banging on about Nicola Sturgeon as if she's the Big Bad Wolf in a panto. She doesn't care about England or the UK, she's a patriot who only cares about Scotland and she focuses on that. We're not enemies, we're neighbours. We all like having good neighbours - but we maybe wouldn't like to live in the same house as them!
I think - and know - that the Yes Minister brigade will smarm their way through this, making deals and subtle bribes and it will all be sorted out to their satisfaction. We, as usual, will be left to get on with it. PREP ON! lol

Come out of lurkdom to say how much I love this thread. Ive learned so much. Found it interesting to read everyone's thoughts regarding recent events. You have all helped me prep which I'm glad of at the minute. I fell last week and fractured my knee cap. Because I'm a prepper it meant I had enough stocks in to help me in the short term. Portable phone chargers to keep by me so I'm not having to get up and down. Family and friends are great though as well. My next purchase is to be a solar powered phone charger. Off back to lurkdom.
Welcome boddy, and sorry to hear of the fracture :( keep posting :)

I agree! Now there's a politician thats sticking to her mandate!
    PREP ON! lol
And thats *our* mandate from ourselves :D I think prepping might become really essential for a little while, because of strikes disrupting supplies? Maybe.

As an amateur historian, what all of this actually reminds me of is the English Civil War, in the 17th century - not in terms of violence (I believe it was worse than World War I in that respect per head of population) but in terms of how it split pre-existing groupings and classes. Thats exactly what this issue has done.

  • MAR the media are putting emphasis on the fact that Nicola Sturgeon has said she'll somehow block the Brexit for the UK as a whole and that's what is making for the unpopularity. I don't know if it's the truth but there is a rawness in society now and there has to be someone to blame, justifiably or not, it's people!

I have been reading the forums with interest but resolved to keep my thoughts to myself. However, this morning I have been listening to young people railing about the injustice of having their futures ruined by old people who had no futures anyway. Did my ears deceive me, or did I hear that a petition was being raised to include 14 - 17 year olds on electoral rolls? Merciful heavens!

    Let me speak.

Dear seventeen. I do know how you feel. After all I have been 17 myself and remember what it was like. I have also had the great good fortune to have been 27, 37, 47, 57, 67 and (just) 77.
I know full well that you have very clear intentions regarding the rest of your life, the career you will have, the partner you will marry, the children you will have, the holidays you will take and the money you will earn. I did.
Unfortunately life very seldom falls in with our plans and as you experience setbacks and disappointments your views will adapt to the changes that you have to accommodate.

Your narrow, tunnel vision of the future as you see it will expand with every event that you experience so that by the time you get to my great age it will be so wide that it is getting close to 360 degrees. You will be amazed at the way your views change over the years.

Coming back to this business of the referendum, I have every sympathy with you. After all, life in the EU is all you have ever known and to step outside that must be worrying. These old people have callously snatched away your security blanket and cast you into uncertain waters.
Get used to it. This is what real life is like. You will learn that there are absolutely no certainties and you simply have to deal with events as they happen.

As for preparing for this uncertain future, be prudent, be sensible but don't give up your life to it.
When I was 18 there was something called the "one in four" scheme in which 1 woman in 4 in the country would be trained to cope in the event of a nuclear explosion.
We were taught how to organise a windowless 'refuge room'. I don't remember the details but do know that in the 60 years since then I have never had occasion to boil a kettle on a flower pot upended over a candle or needed any of the other equipment we were urged to keep by us at all times. Now if someone had warned us about the sudden shortage of toilet rolls and sugar in the 70's or candles after the hurricane in the 80's........but the crystal ball failed.

So, my little darlings, don't despair. We've not taken away your future, simply adjusted it a bit.

I might be old - actually there is no doubt about it, I AM old, but I believe that I still have lessons to learn, changes to make and dreams to dream. You have all these things in spades full. Enjoy the journey, you are more resilient than you think. God bless.

Now I've just learnt something new for the day there Monna. I never realised there was this "1 in 4" scheme to prepare (yeh....right:cool:) for nuclear catastrophe. Add that it sounds like it was only women this applied to:cool: First thought = just as well I wasnt around at that point and someone had "chosen" me for that then isnt it:rotfl:The phrase "bit off more than they can chew" would rapidly have come to mind:rotfl:

But yes.....I have to agree about Life not going "According to Plan" (darn it....). I would put it that one keeps the Plan there at forefront of mind and tries to make Life get "as near to the Plan" as its possible to do - given available circumstances. Better half the Plan, than none of the Plan. Guess that's where the phrase "Half a loaf is better than none" comes from maybe?

But I still dont see it as "old" people voting one way and "young" people voting another. To be honest - I'm absolutely puzzled as to why the age of people polled was even included on the statistics. It's just so irrelevant - people are people and one vote is one vote. I cant honestly think why age was included as a factor in the poll. Anyway - its downright easy to put a bias in a poll anyway. One of my friends here is in marketing and I was walking round an event with him and wife and up toddles a pollster to us and one of their questions was as to whether we would make it priority to choose Welsh food products over any others available. I dont know quite which of us got in first with a question back to the pollster about "Do you mean:
    a. Would we choose Welsh because it is Welsh
    OR
    b. Would we choose Welsh because it's the most "local" food there is, given that this is Wales?"

I think he got the question in first by a whisker and then proceeded to tell the pollster it had been very badly worded - because many people try and choose "local" (regardless of what particular area is meant by "local" at that point).

One pollster wondering just how to translate our unanimous "We will choose 'local' if we can (fewer food miles) - but we don't specifically choose 'Welsh" per se ".....

That's the thing - pollsters (amongst others) do word things very badly and/or deliberately to get the result they want.

I think you've hit the nail on the head about why people get angry about Nicola Sturgeon.

You said it yourself, she only cares about Scotland, not the Uk.

But whether she likes it or not she is still British, and the referendum was about the whole of the U.K.

It was one vote per person, and the question was whether the Uk should remain in or leave, not whether England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland should individually stay or leave. We weren't voting for our region - we were voting about the whole of the uk

Plus, if, as you say, she doesn't care about England, what reason do the English have to look favourably on her?

Edited to add - in her favour, she seems to have a plan, which is more than can be said for those in Westminster
