Unfortunately, there are very few provable facts.
One fact (and, to my mind, a majorly important one) is, we pay Billions of Pounds to the EU, every year, with a decent chunk of that being spent on subsidising businesses, who are in direct competition with UK businesses.0 -
I think you made some very valid points monnagram, mand I'm glad you shared your thoughts. They've actually helped me to make a decision.
I shall vote 'leave. '
I've dithered, read, browsed the Internet for hours and dithered again. There is NO unbiased, objective information anywhere that I can find; though I've read enough biased, subjective information to last me a lifetime. So I'm going with my heart, not my head (which aches too much after all of my 'information' gathering attempts to be capable of rational thought) on this very vexed question. I AM proud to be British. I've never been proud to be a member of the EEC one way or another.
Our open borders have done nothing to improve the quality of my, or of my families, lives, and EU policies haven't eased things appreciably for anyone around me in my local area. Although, in order to be absolutely fair and impartial I feel obliged to say that neither have policies dictated by successive governments here in the UK. I'm tired of bureaucrats in Brussels being able to dictate policies which adversely impact on aspects of life in the UK, and I'm tired of politicians per se.
It is the prospect of the removal of at least one layer of that top-heavy, self-serving bureaucracy that has finally swayed my decision. I suspect that money saved won't be ploughed back into essential public services here in the UK: but we are by law at least entitled to ASK our government for a record of their public spending. Such a record does not appear to be forthcoming from the EUropean parliament. Therefore, until such figures are made freely available and accessible I want OUT.
Many thanks to all on this thread, your input has been both objective and invaluable, even if you may disagree with the decision I've finally made I value your honesty and integrity.
I'm very new to this forum, hope I haven't offended anyone by joining this discussion, but thank you all again.0 -
I haven't been in this thread before but something Made peek in today I've been fascinated by the lovely sensible and polite debating and thoughts over the coming vote.
I will be watching the brexit film someone posted a link to a couple of pages back later tonight.
Can I just say what a lovely group of people you all are, I hope to pop in again.SPC~12 ot 124

Evening all.
Nobody has ownership of this thread, some of us have been kicking around longer, or posting more frequently, but we don't have special privileges and anyone can put their opinion out there. I'm glad to see cheapskate again, and always enjoy reading monnagran and cappella's posts. And there are others who dip in and out and post occasionally and other who perhaps read quietly along and don't post at all.
The election calls are becoming more and more frequent at work. I seriously question the sense of having the referendum in the summer as so many voters are going to be off on their holibobs and are having to make arrangements for postal and proxy votes. Seems to me that wintertime would have found more of the citizenry at home and been a better time, but ya gets what ya gets.
I've gone postal (you may have long suspected this) and my ballot paper arrived today. My thoughts are concrete (Out) and my reasoning derived from RL experiences. Hell, I could top anything the daily wail comes up with and it isn't hearsay, it's stuff going on around me - we must be the laughingstock of Europe, the things we give away.......
'Nuff said.
In terms of preptastic matters, what will happen when the vote is counted? I suspect whichever side gets its way, the result will be what the horseracing fraternity call winning by a short nose.
Predictably, we shall see the following; recounts, allegations of fraud, allegations that persons not entitled to vote have voted, excessive smiliness from eurocrats if we Stay and thinly-veiled threats from the same if we Go.
Investors are apparently already sitting on their hands but the investments are into highly-priced real estate in London's most glamourous enclaves. I confess myself to caring not a whit for the ownership of apartments in the multi-million price bracket - no impact on my life whomever owns them.
The GBP will bounce around a bit on the international exchanges and so may the shareprice of some companies.
Nobody knows what the flip will happen and any coverage is flim-flam and scaremongering of one flavour or other. Probably the best thing for the yet-undecided voter to do would be to declare a media sabbatical and go for a few long walks to aid clear thinking and make a decision which seems best to them.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Instead of which I shall go & sit in a farmer's field for 3 days and attempt to sell old stuff to people who are interested in old stuff - but not daft!
I think it is going to have to come down to instinct in the end. I'm still not 100% decided; my kids have grown up as Europeans and take for granted their right to travel, live & work anywhere in the EU they choose. One is thinking of spending the next 6 months in Milan as I type; it's cheaper & warmer than Guildford & the food's much better. I have family in France & Spain & really don't want to see them twisting in the wind. I deplore the CAP & the damage it's done to our small farmers and our countryside by extension. However I don't want the current crew to think they can have it all their own way from now on either!
And it isn't so much that facts are thin on the ground, as that I don't know which facts I should be looking for!Angie - GC Aug25: £106.61/£550 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)0 -
After the skulduggery that went on with postal votes in the independence referendum, I think whatever the Westminster establishment wants then that will be the result we get, whether we vote for it or not.0

Hello. Mind if theres room for a littleish one to join?
getting more and more worried about all the cuts happening. Also try to live a make do mend , live without life, because not only Can we not afford it, we also try to not waste anything. Anyways thats me.
Re the in/out vote. I know which way I am going, not saying because i'm rubbish at explaining why, especially at this time of night lol. BUT, i have to say it's really lovely to see a polite debate that hasn't turned into a nasty slanging match, you should all be very proud of yourselves xxAfter the skulduggery that went on with postal votes in the independence referendum, I think whatever the Westminster establishment wants then that will be the result we get, whether we vote for it or not.
That said I saw on a documentry not so long ago, a chap asking people to vote a certain way and giving them money to do so. If you are desperate for money, what would you do? We all know vote rigging and buying goes on. With all this technology you would think there would be a more honest way of doing it..but still this is the government we are talking about lol :rotfl:

How lovely to have new friends come in to join us, you're so welcome here! Watching the breakfast programme on TV this morning I've come to the sad conclusion that no politician will ever give a straight answer to any question put to them, no matter how many times the presenter pulls them back to the point. I'm really not interested in party spin which is all we seem to be getting, I'm really not interested at this point in the proceedings of a referendum in whether or not a particular party leader is strong enough in his role. What I am interested in is how a yes or no vote will change daily life and the future here in the UK. If only someone in politics/economics would actually give me some facts and stop saying that leaving is a leap into the unknown. Surely there must be some actualities that can be given?0

Maybe there are MrsL, but this lot of eejits in govt just don't know any! They seem to be afflicted with terrible tunnel vision lol.
I'm starting to build up my food stash again after letting it almost vanish. In the past, everytime I stocked up on something then soon after that one of us couldnt eat it and I had to give it away. The week after I bought 10kg of sugar from Costco, the RV was diagnosed with diabetes.. the week after I bought a ton of pasta we went low-carb. Then after that it was me cutting out all artifical additives, then it was me trying GF, then it was me cutting out wheat all its ilk.
And after all that, I still have ME and exhaustion and the cat has claimed the stash cupboard to hide in.0
