Good point, MrsL, we probably wouldn't know until it was far too late; some sort of leak and 'public enquiry' 10 years down the line.... :rotfl:

I suspect it wouldn't take that long, its not like were talking about honourable men, most of those involved are politicians.

Welcome back cheapskate and hello to all the new bods come to talk to us.

No harm in being prepared :) well no harm to you, pitchforks and flaming torches can cause a lot of harm in the right hands (as GQ says, steel, they don't like it up 'em)

It sounds to me as if they wanted you to sign to agree that you'd been advised to move your car, so that if it gets damaged during the street party the the housing assn can say they are not liable to pay for any damage because they warned you to move it.

ETA Oops, didn't see nuatha's post before writing mine!

    Great minds (or fools) :)

The problem with disclaimers, they have very little legal backing. Relying on them is a shortcut to paying expensive compensation. (Proper precautions to prevent damage are a far better legal defence).

You think the timing was coincidental?:rotfl:
:D I think that they've timed it so they can run away and hide on summer recess after the results, as they plot to save their arrisses and hang the rest of us out to dry. But I'm just a nasty little cynic.

Whatever happens, the fallout will be interesting, as in the proverbial interesting times. Let's say the results are so close as to be a fraction of 1% between sides, or even 1-5%. I could easily see that happening. Will TPTB reckon that we have to have another referendum in short order, for 'clarification' and keep on plugging away at them until they get the desirable-to-them answer?

If the vote is Out, and the wheels start turning to make that a reality in a couple of years, will TPTB (inc such heavy hitters as the IMF and World Bank) try to sabotage the fledgling post-Brexit economy, so they can punish us for daring to leave or make being Out so uncomfortable that we beg for re-admission?

Would the financial enclave called the City of London decamp overseas? Would that matter the slightest to most people? Will airlines cease to use Heathrow and Gatwick airports as transport hubs? Will Eire seal the border with Ulster and impose passport controls?

Will transnational corporations which, let's face it, are far richer than many nation states and have bought pols in all nations, try to bully their way to more favourable trade and tax deals? Will overseas owners of key industries pull the plug? Ooops, those horses have bolted already.......... :(

Equally, if the vote in In, but by a narrow margin, might TPTB realise that they have to make changes to some things which have been putting the backs of many of the resident British populace? How much or how little will they do?

I shall be watching with interest between gardening episodes.

I agree with both ivyleaf and nuathas interpretation of the letter you were asked to sign.
I agree about that being the real reason, absolutely :D
    Well done on not signing.
Thanks! I'm much less compliant, much more easily, these days :rotfl:

I very much hope that this is NOT just a paper exercise to give the appearance of democracy but the outcome of a properly fair vote by the people of the land. I hope that a fair count will decide the leave or stay decision of eligible voters and that it is not a pre decided result and not just a placatory gesture to have a 'free' vote on something this important. I guess we'll just have to wait and see won't we?

I have uncomfortable memories of the democratic voting that took place in schools when I was teaching.

Scene: Class of children voting for form captain, milk monitor or head pencil sharpener.
    Method: Secret ballot.
Children wrote the name of the most popular child in the class on a slip of paper and placed said slip into a box or bag.
Teacher took box or bag into the staff room and deposited contents into waste paper bin. Teacher returned to classroom and announced the name of the winner that he/she had previously decided upon.

Result: Children happy that they have had their say.
Teacher happy that someone who could actually do the job would be doing it.
    Scrutineers maintained a diplomatic silence.

    They couldn't. Could they?

:) I have a vague memory of an old British film, possibly an Ealing comedy, where all decisions were made by referenda until the populace was sick of it.

Or was that a febrile hallucination brought on by eating too much chard?

Have just come in from the allotment where I have been doing something artistic with paracord, 8 ft fenceposts and bean canes. Hah! See if the burgers blow down this year............!

The children have also discovered things they didn't bother looking at. Less is most definitely more.

Carboot Sunday. OH broke my laptop charger last night grrr, snapped it clean in half and one of the wires has unsoldered. Gong to see if I can fix it first. Other wise ebay compatible.
NS day yesterday. Made ginger and banana parkin. Famly hated it. More breakfast cake for me then!

  • Getting the dehydrator down from the store room this morning and He Who Knows will bring me much rhubarb from the allotment to process and store. I think this year I'll be using methods of preservation that don't require electricity to keep the produce useable just in case the power shortages that have been possible for the last few years become a reality. I'd hate to loose a whole seasons worth of frozen fruit and veg because of a power outage. Jams, jellies, pickles and chutneys are made as a matter of course and I'm going to use the pressure canner I got for Christmas a couple of years ago to make bottled fruit too. I'll make the best use of what we grow that I can too just in case we come out of the EU and food prices escalate.
