  • Can I put in another vote for Keanu Reeves? I had a lovely poster of him from Sky magazine on my university bedroom wall...

Unknown to OH, I have squirrelled away a couple of packets of Minstrels in case of a power cut, and hav stocked up on little bars and boxes of Xmas chocs from Al*I and P*oundland to keep in a shoebox under the bed. If I tell him about them, we will end up finding some excuse to eat them sooner rather than later!

here is a good site for making veg powders and flours

the Telegraph is giving a running update on the Greek protests

It says there are some demonstrations in Crete, not sure about other islands

According to the news the real demonstrations in Athens have just finished peacefully.......hoping no anarchists start trouble later as it distracts from the real demonstrations. Very quiet here , it feels like a Sunday and the roads and town are just about empty.

Apparently the transport strikes meant that a lot of people couldn't get to the demonstrations!! Last time I think they actually ran a service to help people get to Syntagma Square.

Interesting timing of the Greek vote. The US election should have been well out of the way but it seems that some areas may extend voting. Plus, with it being so tight, there are loads of legal challenges in lots of places. So the US result may not be known before the crunch vote in Greece on November 11. If that's the case, do your sources suggest there will be another fudge? (of course, there could well be another fudge anyway, why break the habit of a lifetime)

Grandma thats a great link, thank you, you find some good stuff  Am liking the dried pea flour as we eat lots of pea soup.

2tonsills keep safe my dear, at least the protests wont reach you as they always end up in trouble when the anarchists turn up. Its sad that peaceful protests by genuine people always get infiltrated - I know from experience in Manchester.

hummingfridge glad you are sorting out the essentials, I try but Oh found my stash. My Mum always buys us and dgs sweeties so I put half away for emergencies, you know hormones and such, but found empty wrappers in the cupboard so unless the mice have developed thumbs it must be OH :rotfl:

Having a NSD :j again :j OH is having a sleepy day and its very cold here for him.

I have a stupid intolerance at the moment to dairy, lactose, casein, soy and who knows what else.

I know I could try making proper egg custard with a milk alternate but as my previous attempts at custard have ended up like scrambled egg (using 'normal' ingredients) I am not in a rush to give it a go without a tried and tested recipe. Also I have little to no patience and arthritis so 20 mins of stirring a pan of potential gloop is not going to work for me :(

So anyone that wants to dehydrate some dairy/soy free custard please let me know! :T

I can't dehydrate it for you (dehydrator is still on my lust list) but Birds Custard Powder (not the instant) works with oat milk to give a pleasant fairly neutral creamy custard (add vanilla, cocoa etc according to preference).
Rice milk really doesn't work (though 50/50 with coconut milk produces a reasonable pouring sauce with a mild coconut flavour)

It still means some whisking, but its a lot less faff than egg based custards.
I also found a quick almond milk custard recipe in my notes. Bring 500ml Almond milk and 2 tablespoons of sugar (honey or maple syrup both work) to just below a rolling boil. Slake 2 tablespoons of cornflour or arrowroot with water, whisk into the heated milk, simmer while whisking until you achieve the desired consistency.
Notes, an extra tablespoon of arrowroot was needed to get this to a creme pat thickness. Flavour was less pronounced than I'd hoped for (really helpful, I know, its now meaningless to me as well.)

Apologies for the delay in posting this, my recipe notes are a lot less organised than they should be.

Don't forget to factor in the stairs if you're in a high rise and the power goes out... heavy essentials and 9 flights don't really mix as far as I'm concerned. Also, it could get "interesting" with waste disposal:eek:
GQ's tip about the cat litter reminds me that we have a secret stash of this as it's used as ballast for the loudspeaker stands.:o I can hear the argument now over taking the speakers off the stands to gain access to the litter...

By the way: anyone who's watching Walking Dead series 3: so, who cuts the grass in the prison? Can't all be flattened by zombies:D
