Nargleblast wrote: »Greyqueen, you are spot on with everything you say about differences in cultural beliefs and behaviours. Our PM has announced today that money will be available to pay for Muslim women to have English lessons in order for them to integrate better. Whilst I fully agree that anyone settling in another country should be legally obliged to learn at least enough of the local language to get by ( and that applies just as much to British people settling overseas), what he doesn't seem to grasp is that some of these Muslim women are living in households which are firmly stuck in the seventh century in their beliefs and attitudes, and the men in those households will not "allow" their females to have English lessons.
The do-gooding, open-toed sandal brigade need to open their eyes and face up to reality. Multiculturalism can work well, but only when people from all the cultures mix with each other and treat each other with respect. When you get people from some cultures refusing to have anything to do with others, and creating their own ghetto areas, then multiculturalism has no chance.
I read that and think its a good idea (ie that people should be expected to speak English by 2.5 years here in Britain). This is the thing - ie that some of these womens husbands might well do their best to prevent their wives attending English classes. However, I'm guessing some of the "stronger" women will find it useful to be able to use the fact that it will be law here as a way to get round a reluctant husband. It may not go all the way there as a tactic for the Government to introduce this - but I do think its got to help. Better to light a candle as the phrase goes...
There might have to be an element of punishment introduced for reluctant hubbies - to stop them standing in the way of their wives - and if that's how the cookie crumbles, then that's what we have to do...(ie punish the men and not their wives) if these women are prevented from attending classes.0 -
I think there are degrees of everything and it's all far less "them and us" than many media outlets would have you believe (yes, daily wail I am looking at you). Tomorrow there is a programme on called "the Jihadi next door" - if that isn't inciting then I don't knew what is....I wanna be in the room where it happens0

Being an open toed sandal wearer who aims to do good with my life and still lives in the real world (or as much in the real world as is possible for a middle aged hippy) I suspect I've got a better grip on multiculturalism than many close minded followers of the Murdoch and Rothmere empires.
Unfortunately the refusal to treat others with respect and a willingness to mix isn't limited to any culture.0 -

I personal view is that all religions are backward and insular. Religion encourages fear and suspicion and to me it's the worst thing that ever happened to the world. Put medicine and physics back hundreds of years for a start. But I know I'll get howled down and possibly burnt at a stake lol0

My self defence instructor said that the best defence was not to need it, i.e. be aware! Also, that kicking in the groin was too difficult, because it takes too much force to actually make the attacker immobile. You are more likely to kick too softly and make him angrier. Go for other sensitive spots.
Yes, they always show women in films and TV kicking men in the groin, but if you have the chance it is better to use your hand/s and grab, twist and pull as hard as you can.0 -

The streets of London are paved with gold. . .
At least some sections of the British media are saying that asylum seekers and refugees are guaranteed to get a furnished house, car and money to support the lifestyle they aspire to. Actually the media is complaining that that's what they'll get in preference to Brits or armed forces personnel or whoever. Just because we know the media lie to sell newspapers, we can hardly be surprised that some people believe it (!!!!!! large sections of the British public apparently believe it and continue to support this propaganda by literally paying for it).
Just as a number of Brits expect everywhere abroad to be able to cater for British cultural mores (and food and language to boot) its hard to realise just how different another culture can be until you have experience of other cultures.
So if you are British you have to be evicted to actually get a chance of being housed but even then there are serious drawbacks, as councils will do as much as possible to declare anyone as intentionally homeless and so not eligible for housing as they simply do not have the resources to help. Even leaving an abusive partner can be counted as making your self intentionally homeless and so ineligible for assistance. It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0
