  • Canning/bottling fruit and veg and also if you're really meticulous and follow the instructions to the last crossed 't' meat and stews etc. can be canned using several methods and thereafter need no energy input to remain safe to consume in the future, They sit on a shelf until needed. Meats and stews etc. need to be canned in a pressure canner to make sure they are safe for consumption. In the US they do much canning and we used to bottle fruit and veg here before we had the availability of fridges and freezers. Dehydrators/dryers are another very good and safe way of storing surpluses for the future. The downside of both these is that like jams, chutneys and some pickles they need energy in the first place to cook/process the produce before preserving it.

I re-use foil if it isn't dirty, and re-use bags bread come in to use for sarnies or the freezer.

Hard wearing/ thick freezer bags I sometimes wash and re-use too, depends what they have had in them. I can remember my gran doing this now that I think about it.

I also sometimes re-use baking paper, yesterday I made meringues, no residue left on the paper, so have kept it for another time.

I bag just about everything in the freezer, trays of chicken get bagged instead of left in trays, this way I can cram it full to the gunnels, which in turn is less on fuel to keep freezer cold.

Bit of a nightmare to go through it though sometimes and find certain things..... it's a bit of a case of..."i'm going to freezer-dive, I may be a while"...then getting it all back in can be hard, but I get there in the end... :rotfl:

Kittie..... :(. Hope family and animals are ok.
Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.

Not heard from aus, they`ll have too much to do. Near harvey just s of yarloop, which has been burnt out. Temperatures 40 c and lightening strikes all over causing the fires

I am absolutely dreading potential sudden high temperatures here as could happen due to wild weather swings, not going into divisive whys and wherefores :). Preps for me now involve keeping stores and water handy for spring onwards. Anything over 24 is too hot for me but I am talking 35+ so am prepping for that, just in case. Trouble is the swings are so fast, from yukky wet and mild to burning baking hot and potentially to the coldest freezing situations like -20 or less. We all need to adapt physically and the best able are the young well people, older bodies and babies don`t cope nearly as well

China doesn`t worry me, it is as it is, having been through quite a few of these turmoils. Shouldn`t affect the wider world too much but makes you realise the instability of just about everything. Life goes on and best, as always, with safety nets in place

So sorry to hear about your sister and family kittie! I hope they are able to get in touch soon x

Mrs LW I use enamelled roasting tins, but they don't have lids, unfortunately. Not sure if I understood correctly - did you mean that you use the roaster rather than a series of disposable foil roasting trays?

Good golly, I rescued one of the big stainless steel ones a while back & have been merrily using it - I had no idea they were so expensive! But very, very useful.

Things seem very bad now in North-East Scotland and it's snowing further south, according to a couple of my friends; the rain's still hammering down intermittently down here and lots of roads are closed. It's not just because the drains haven't been cleared as many people seem to think; they have been. They just can't cope. Next week's forecast is for colder, drier weather - bring it on!

Sending warm hugs and thoughts to KITTIE and her loved ones .
Re food storage I have spent decades collecting glass and stainless steel containers . I confess my rectangular pyrex food containers for fridge and freezer use are glass base with what seems to be silcone lids - not perfect but the best I can do for now . I have spent a lifetime avoiding plastic near food and the os joy of my life is all of my life milk has been brought to the doorstep rain , hail or shine , by a real milkman in a real milk float and of course in glass bottles .
It is better to light a single candle than to curse the darkness.

There but for fortune go you and I.
  • It's a covered oval roaster, the old fashioned kind with a domed lid with dimples in it that drip bastings back onto the top of the meat. I've never used disposable aluminium trays and find the roaster does make beautiful roasted meats and is also Ok for hot pots too and you take the domed top off those half an hour before the cooking time is ended to crisp up the spuds, jolly good bit of kit it is too IVY!
