  • I find a teatowel put over the top of my bread dough whilst it rises works fine.

For any containers of anything that some would put clingfilm over the top of - it seems to be fine, by and large, put in fridge with nothing covering the dish. If I feel the need of a "cover" - then I use a teaplate or something as cover.

Still a bit stuck re something to put food in in the freezer and using ziplock bags - but wash out and re-use them as often as I can until they break. I like the idea of glass mason jars used in the freezer even - but struggle with the fact that it would noticeably reduce the amount of food I could fit in there. My freezer is a huge great thing and taller than me - but its absolutely crammed as it is.

Lyn You mentioned plastic covers with elasticated edges to use instead of cling film. They sound like a packet of things my American sis-in-law passed on to me, as she had brought them back from a trip to the States but found she wasn't using them. They're called "Cover-ups" and are made of polythene with rubber-band-type elastic round the edge.
Just had a look on Fleabay and they are there KITCHEN CRAFT Elastic edged re-useable vinyl plastic bowl covers at £2.75 for a pack of mixed sizes in red and white check colour.

I agree that reusable is a lot less of an issue than disposable.
I use shower caps - couple of smaller ones work well for bowls in the fridge and a couple of larger ones fit the large stainless bowls I use.

I too would worry about lack of space in the freezer using glass jars for stuff.

I have a few shower caps, have never used them in the shower....but now know what I can use them for..! they have all been given as gifts in sets over the years. See......everything has a use... :D. I knew my hoarding tendencies would be of use.. :D.

Boiler is now not happy at all and heating not really working. Well...I can Make it work...but this could make it all worse so. Asbo is even more unhappy than boiler..

    Plumber coming tuesday.

I'm looking forward to watching 10000 BC two tribes, to see what survival tips I can get from that. ..... and watching how us hoomans deal with it.

I shall be googling to see if there are any of those mini survival courses local to me.

Very cold here now, even menopause not over compensating in the house. Lots of fields converted to lakes, and we may have snow here soon. Being on the coast now I escape the snow quite well, but driving into town for work I hit it there.

    How Is mum doing MTSTM?

    How are family Kittie.

Mardatha......hope you made it to your very own siberia that is your kitchen.... mine is getting similar, as it has no heating in there anyhow.
Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.
  • Hi Calico,

Its still rather unclear. Basically - they've gone very uncommunicative and just seem to want to "keep themselves to themselves" as far as I can make out. Will be going back shortly for a visit anyway to see how things are for myself. Am not at all sure my mother actually wants me back visiting...so am half expecting an earful for doing so:cool:.

Thanks for all the tips on plastic covers, will take a look on fleabay, has got to be better than cling film.

Roasting tins: I tend to brown my joints/birds in a frying pan and then just put them in the slow cooker these days. Cuts down on cleaning and energy used.

I'm intrigued by the plastic covers, but will probably just continue to chuck a plate or saucer over whatever I'm popping into the fridge, unless I see any at a car boot or jumble sale; mostly I store stuff in glass or stainless steel jugs or bowls with flat tops, so that works OK.

Forgot to mention.......got a few bags of stores in the other day as planned, shoved them in dining room as didn't have time to hide them properly and in an organised fashion.

Was eating in there with bf later that evening......

3hrs later,...(3hrs!...so clearly been praying on his mind and is there anything he can eat right now)...he says..."you have a bag of food in the dining room, what's in it and does it need to go into the kitchen"

My reply was obviously don't worry about it, i'm in the middle of sorting the cupboards. :rotfl:

Just leave it where it is....

I do wonder whether even his mother used to hide food from him back in the day...he seems to think not. However I did say how would you know? That statement confused the heck out of him.. :D.

Just thought I would share a bit of the funny side of prepping around someone who doesn't think past the next few hours at times.

Apparently we have lots of snow due, I hope not, especially for scotland. Hope all are well up there.

I just realised the abbreviation for boyfriend (bf) is also an old euphemism for 'bl**dy fool'. :)
  • Grinning a bit at the thought of BF not thinking more than a few hours ahead Calico:rotfl:.

As someone who just takes it for granted that I think years ahead, I would struggle a bit with someone having a "right now...and next week is ever so far ahead..." way of thinking.

Guessing you mean that he wouldn't go so far as to even pick up his diary on a Sunday and think "Right - now what I have got lined-up socially next week? What tasks do I need to do next week?".

Should I call him a "Gather ye rosebuds while ye may" boyfriend?:rotfl:
