£land bought out 99p, didn't they? It was a £land branded store.
There's a downside to this, in that I used to joke about being too miserly for £land when I could shop at 99p Store, and that won't work any more. It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0 -
You are very wise to be extremely well stocked up on foodstuffs MITSTM and I endeavour to get to that point again.
I stock up on food for SHTF scenarios. My family have just gone through an extreme SHTF scenario. We are in the comfortable position we are in today because of those food stocks. See without baring my soul we needed to fund a very quick move to a place that was a 12 hour round trip. We had to put down housing deposits and rental fees and pay for credit checks. This all blew up without notice. We had savings but not enough. We used our food stocks so we could put our grocery budget towards our finances.
Our food stocks did the job that they were supposed to and like I have already mentioned we are well aware of the importance of getting it right back to to better levels.
It doesn't matter what what you want in life, how you plan it, how much you think you need to save etc etc life has it's own mind and I for one thank goodness we weren't rooted with a mortgage and that we could relocate to the extreme that was forced upon us.
I sit here thankful but battered, switch on and never complacent.0 -
Fuddle, you are an inspiration to us all & living proof that TS hitting TF doesn't necessarily mean all-out nuclear war, asteroid strike, epidemics or any of the other disasters people seem to be fretting about on some of the big "prepping" sites! I"m sad that you had to go through what you did, and that you are no longer with us down here, but glad for you that your preps saw you through a time of trouble, which is after all what it's all about!Angie - GC Aug25: £374.16/£550 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)0

Craigywv,
I came up with a solution for this problem pending you getting a new fridge freezer:
You just need a number of ice packs or plastic bottles you can (almost due to expansion) fill with water & freeze in your functioning freezer. Every 12 hours, you swap the now melted ones for newly frozen ones in your non functioning fridge.0 -

I think it's possible bf thinks around a month ahead when it comes to his business....beyond that, is anyone's guess really. I think initially he possible did think I was a hoarder. Then I explained my thinking to him, as I prep for various scenarios, retirement/job loss/old age etc. I pointed out to him, that come retirement, I won't need to buy any linen, towels bla bla bla.....the money I will have will hopefully be mine to spend as I like other than the bills. He on the other hand, will still be thinking every so often, rugger....i need to buy x y Z, and will have less money than now to do it on.
Once this was explained, he didn't think I was so stupid. He does think emergency food and toilet rolls are funny though. When he asks why I want him to bring in more loo roll (as I have reached the emergency stock level)... I don't go into it now, I just say to get it unless he wants to starve or cook dinner....
When I do my small winter preps....he asks if he has to go out and buy some huskies....
I'm busy tomorrow, but plan to hide the food preps Tuesday whilst waiting for plumber to arrive. I have managed to get stuff with good dates on it so that I won't have to check it or rotate it for around 18 months to 2yrs.
This year I need to sort out the space allocated for growing some food stuffs. I need to build some kind of long narrow greenhouse type of thing due to the wind here wrecking things regularly. Also have a general tidy up, as I seem to have collected a large amount of planks of wood and 'stuff' to make things with which needs putting out of sight and organising.
EDIT.
Found myself possibly stuck in night shift mode.
All dried goods boxed and hidden away........lol. Jars and tins will be done tuesday.Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.0 -
thanks for that JKO ,I shall indeed look into that as we sell the ice packs in my work. have to dash so will let you know how I fair later on thanks againC.R.A.P.R.O.L.L.Z #7 member N.I splinter-group co-ordinater

I was a bit surprised to find a workman I have decided on for summat here thinking several months ahead and booking me in to do the job I want from him in spring. But I'm guessing it works for him - as he and his wife both seem to quite confidently take it that this is "his" area and he will have work to do that far ahead (though he certainly charges more than I was hoping to pay for job concerned:(). Don't know whether he has me written down in his diary or just keeping a note in his head though of "Money's job to be done about so-and-so date":rotfl:
Re your greenhouse type thing - try looking up www.garden-products.co.uk for the firm called "Access Garden products". I've got their catalogue and am rather eyeing-up stuff in it for when I can afford it (it aint cheap....). Personally - I'm always attracted to things saying "25 year guarantee" though - as I just translate that into meaning "Should see me out then...:rotfl:". Grins wondering if I can turn round to The Maker (ie mine) if I'm still around in 25 years time and say "Excuse me - isn't it about time you took these goods back for recycling then?" and point at myself LOL.0 -
Pineapples cottage refurbishment benefits from all electric including knackered old storage heaters :eek::eek: Apart from a small multifuel stove that is.. Anyhow it took a while to sink in (till the first bill in fact) that day time rates for Economy 7 users are eyewatering. Consequently pending a revamp of the heating she has become a creature of the night - doing as much as possible during the Economy 7 period. Yeah for slow cookers! We also keep a pan of water on the stove. Anyhow have just come across a 'stove top cooker' - a gadget with a funnel in the middle. Has anyone ever used such a thing?
This one has mixed reviews (even worse on Amazon) so will research further.

There was rather a phase on MSE a while back of people mentioning Remoska cookers. I know a couple of people waxed lyrical about them. They are rather dearer than that gadget Pineapple - but you might want to google. Those Remoskas do have a non-stick coating on though.
Personally - I can't comment on things like that - as I won't buy cookware that has one of those non-stick coatings on it basically. Mine is either stainless steel or I've bought a cast-iron thing recently and I won't get anything with aluminium in either. Between those two things - I'm astonished to find that rules out much of the cookware currently still on the market.0
