:(jk0, if you know the young man's name, a little googling will probably reveal a media report of the trial. I know of two young men in jail in this age group - the sex offender got three years and the murderer got life and won't be considered for parole until he is middle-aged. So, if he is serving a long sentence, I think he may have killed someone.

Nothing her brother did should be taken as having any bearing on the GF's character or that of their wider family. The aforementioned murderer is from a perfectly-respectable family who have been known to mine for a couple of generations. They are shocked, horrified, ashamed, everything you could imagine if your relative had done something like that.

    Thanks GQ.

Well, I have done some googling. It seems my gf's brother was locked up for 12 months in 2011 for looting during the London riots. No idea why he's still there. I guess prison may be the sort of place where you acquire further convictions for defending yourself against fellow criminals.

No, I did not think any the worse of my gf. There but for the grace of God go I.

So if peeps were going to try and cut back on plastic products etc especially around the house/ shopping how would you freeze, or store stuff in the freezer?? Any suggestions??

Was thinking of trying paper bags for sandwiches, as you can pick them up in the wholesalers ..was thinking this would be better than clingfilm or foil, and could be put on the compost heap after use

Kittie, good grief - reading that article through is horrendous. I hope your family are safe - and all their animals. Heartbreaking :(

  • CTC a very quick look on google searching for non plastic freezer containers suggests using cartons (think orange juice or UHT milk and freezer tape, it also says to use pyrex type rectangular dishes but these have plastic lids, sometimes silicone which would be better. They talk of collapsible silicone freezer containers but I've not seen them in the UK and the most sensible suggestion is freezing in wide mouth mason jars which are the equivalent of kilner jars here. they are apparently OK if you make sure they are the widest mouth ones and you don't fill them too full, particularly with anything vaguely liquid. There seems to be mention of the occasional breakage but usually through filling too full. Hope that helps.

Kittie, really, really hoping that your family and all their livestock are & will be OK...

Anyone got any views on what, if any, ramifications the Chinese stock market crisis might have for us ordinary everyday peeps?

I hope that your family are OK and that they had time to let the animals free if they could not transport; which might give some of them a chance.

Their situation really does show that there are even more difficult situations that those that have affected a lot of folk in the UK recently.

So far CTC all I have found is cloth bags but I have been reading about reusable HM beeswax fabric for use in the freezer. Basically using beeswax beads sprinkle over the fabric. Iron between 2 sheets of parchment paper, which can be used again and again as its only to protect the iron and voila - a reusable wrap for food preservation.

    I haven't tried it yet but I will. :)

I have some reusable food storage containers. The fact that they are not a single use item makes them more sustainable. It is not necessarily about finding substitutes for oil but making far better use of what we have.

Though paper and cardboard is probably the easiest alternative solution to plastics for the freezer.

The freezer itself might be a problem; most of our 'leccy is produced by burning gas at power stations, and gas is a by-product of oil production. A freezer's only as good as its power supply... IIRC, we've been warned to expect power cuts to become a feature of life again in the near future. Other kinds of food preservation may become more mainstream once again.

Waxed cotton is just intended as an airtight waterproof food wrap and not freezer specific but I see what you're saying. I once lost a lot of food through a fault in my fridge freezer and since then I don't use it to store food that I rely on or invest in.
