The trouble with things like paper bags, greaseproof paper and aluminium foil is that they are a once only usage and use up resources in their manufacture, cling film by the way is another oil product as are plastic bags and packagings, so many things from one source. I've gotten round using disposables to a certain degree by investing in a covered roaster for the oven (one of those oval ones with a lid that has dimples on for self basting of the meat), a couple of metal water bottles to use when we go out for the day, a couple of tiffin boxes (4 layer stainless steel lunch box, indian in origin) along with some camping 'nesting' cutlery in stainless steel, and for Christmas DD got us both a fabric and plastic coated waterproof sandwich wrap, which seals with Velcro, oil product I know but reuseable many many times. I still use lidded plastic boxes in the fridge though but have some plastic elasticated edge covers for bowls and containers to stop the use of the cling film, had them for years originally from Robert Dyas and came in a pack of different sizes, very useful bit of kit. The other storage I use in the fridge and kitchen is lidded glass jars which have the advantage of being dish washable and therefore sterile next time I need them. I'm a work in progress!!!

The thing that annoys me about plastics (made from oil) is that they are actually very valuable materials................ so we use them to make tonnes and tonnes of disposable products that then take up acres of land fill and are very nasty if burnt.

If we used them to make durable products we could "extend" the life of oil-derived life, or at least some aspects of it.

Do y'know what I think has fuelled (for want of a better word) the increase in plastic and packaging production in terms of food etc? The culture of suing for damages. Over packaging something in stable conditions ensures that the risk of a company being held responsible for anything that may crop up is lessened.

Individuals could take their own wrappings and boxes into food suppliers but my guess is we would be told that it must be wrapped in their packaging, according to their policies etc etc

Even just in these last few months I have had a personal shift from thinking I'm a sensible recycling person, proudly wheeling my bin full of plastic out like a good responsible citizen. Now I think that it's absolutely disgusting that I have a bin full of plastic every 2 weeks. I have enough plastic pots in my cupboards, many idle!

Lyn the enamelled roasting tins? Do they come with a rack for juices to drip down at all?

Certainly do pet, mine was quite expensive at £25 but it's a good heavy enamel and works very well, makes lovely roasts and gives the base for super gravy too. If you're super thrifty too you can spoon off the fat from the pan drippings and use that for saut!ing/frying off veg but I know some folks don't use animal fats, I do and they give a lovely flavour to dishes they're used in. You can get cheaper enamel self basting dishes but I don't think they do such a good job on the meat.

Why on earth has the filter taken out the e in 's a u t e i n g?' is it rude in some way that I don't know about?

I do :D that's why I'm after a tin with a rack plus would like veggies roasting with meat without them sitting in the fat. I would like to invest in a good one so I will go investigate. Ta :)
  • Just looked on Fleabay and the one I have is the Judge Granite 36cm enamel covered roaster, currently on for £30. There are some much cheaper but they aren't the same heaviness I think and might not give you quite such a good result. Some on Amazon too so it might be worth a look there as well.

I make my own pasta so that might help when I make too much.
