It's not just that some are innocent.
It's that most (over 4 out of every 5) are innocent.0 -

In this country, we have innocent "until proven guilty".
If the prosecution cannot prove, beyond reasonable doubt, that you did it, then you are innocent.
We have enough problems with the "no smoke without fire" brigade, without the courts getting in on the act, with "guilty but we can't prove it".
Indeed, that's exactly the mindset we condemn BBC/TVL for having.
Guilt vs innocence in the absolute factual sense rather than the legal one is highly relevent. It may or may not be a provable fact which will stand up to the necessary rigour of the law's definition of proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt, but that doesn't mean that a crime hasn't happened and that someone(s) aren't guilty of perpetrating that crime.
If a body is found in the street with a knife buried to the hilt between its shoulderblades, and no one can be accused never mind convicted, has a crime taken place? Was it a particularly limber suicide victim? Have they had a bizarre accident? Are they just pretending to be dead? Are they there at all or are they a figment of every onlooker's imagination? Or have you got an unsolved murder with an unaccused and unconvicted guilty party or parties?I'd consider TVL being not relevent to the discussion. They are starting from an incorrect hypothesis; everyone has a TV therefore everyone needs a TV license therefore any unlicensed addresses are committing fraud.
If I somehow bypassed my water meter/ gas meter/ electricity meter and made the case to the utility companies when they challenged this, that I was somehow living here and using not one drop of water/ or kwH of electricity, that would be unbelievable. My living without a hugely-popular entertainment device isn't unbelievable, it's just a minority choice, which TVL can't seem to accept as being real.
I don't have a firearms license. I don't receive letters or visits from the Plod demanding to see my guns or that I apply for a license. They are prepared to accept that I don't participate in a minority pastime requiring devices which themselves require licenses.
I work with about 20 immediate colleagues. At least one has (licensed) shotguns. The Plod do not extrapolate that across to the other 19 of us.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Thankfully we survived the storms reasonably intact, both of us and the house. It showed that the roof repairs were done correctly and stood up to the worst rain we have had in years. It also did not come through the wall, which is good. At least it buys a bit of time till the council come and investigate. They are going to have to dig it up the old fashioned way in the street above us as no vehicles can get up there. The house down the street is now dried out. We have high winds today, that are dry but dusty.
We are back to sunshine today , with a new heatwave of over 36 in the shade predicted from Monday until the end of the month. My visitors arrive on 18th for two weeks so its going to be hot , hot , hot for them. They usually come this time of year because its cooler:rotfl: We seem to be in a pattern of very hot dry weather for ten days or so, then horrendous storms for three days. Italy, bless them, are in a pattern of ten days of horrendous storms and three days of sunshine.... they really suffered last winter and there has been no let up in it. They must have horrendous damage.
Japan is currently having a nightmare. They cannot run the water cooling system at Fukushima, as its flooded and the cores that are left are getting hotter. I just saw a report that says some cities are under meters of water. Those poor folks....
I have had various alerts sent to me over the last few days from prepping sites and others who seem to think certain events are going to take place this month. I am not going to add links to them or go into details, in fear of getting accused of being a C T or whatever. But suffice it to say, I have just had a long conversation with my OH and we are going shopping on Monday to add to our lamp oil stash, and to get a large quantity of catering size food packs as well as olive oil and protein powder. If we dont need it this month, I have a feeling we will need it this winter. If that storm was anything to go, by we are in for a rough ride.:eek:0 -
This is a very good site, if you join them on facebook they feature free prepping and survival books, sometimes on kindle sometimes as a pdf.

If 5 people are investigated and one is found to be planning an atrocity surely that validates checking the other 4 if they are close associates/relatives of the one who is guilty? If the police just checked one of the five and not the rest and it was NOT the evil intender who then went on to plant a bomb/suicide bomb an innocent crowd of people how much mud would be slung their way for NOT checking associates and relatives if there was a terror attack? It would be seen as dereliction of duty. Much better to have everyone checked, no matter how many people that is and find the guilty ones than be wary of treading on toes and letting terrorists free to do what they plan.0

Or to be more precise, James Madden of Exactaweather is at it again. I never understand how that man has the ability to bounce back year after year saying THIS year is going to be the worst in 50 years etc etc. Of course, one day he will be right and then he'll be completely irrepressible.
It would be interesting to know what Piers Corbyn (Brother of Jeremy) has to say about the forthcoming winter. He does seem to get things surprisingly right surprisingly oftenIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -

Exactly my point. Unlike BBC/TVL, the police firearms section don't assume guilt, and expect you to demonstrate your innocence.
Nor do the NRA, DVLA, etc.0 -

Checking is one thing, but arresting, and holding without charge, and without a lawyer, for up to 14 days, is quite another.
How would you feel, if you were one of those 257 people?0 -
Probably devastated just like they must but, if arresting me and holding me along with anyone else who was a suspect prevented an atrocity and I was released at the end of that time with no blame attaching to me it would be worth it. If we lived in a real utopian society where all were seen to be keeping the laws and there was no deviation from that it would be a different matter but, as we don't and there must be so much intent to perpetrate these awful acts of terror the police can't surely ignore even the most innocent seeming people IF there is even the tiniest chance they are involved. We none of us are immune to terrorist acts, I would much rather the police do what they are required and perhaps save lives by their actions and keep the nation, ALL the nation as safe as they can.0

If we change our way of life, in response to terrorism, the terrorists have won.
To quote Benjamin Franklin:-
"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."
After the 7/7 bombings, Tony Bliar made a statement, to the effect that we will not change our behaviour and way of life, and yet the next thing he did was to overturn centuries of legal principles, by effectively scrapping the right to legal representation, for suspects.
He then allowed the UK to become complicit in Extraordinary Rendition, and unlimited detention without trial at Guantanamo Bay.
How is that not changing our behaviour and way of life :huh:0
