  • We are back. It was fantastic.:D
Anglesey is having a little lie down in a darkened room after our departure.

Slightly worried you've all been on a foraging course and then eaten the mushrooms that you were told NOT to eat :rotfl:

I like the christmas tree idea, it will stop the dog from having any tree related incidents in the house :D

Hope all ok. Will read back properly later. I'm confused over the word fiat again ;)
Not dim ;) .....just living in soft focus :p
  • Good morning! Back for a very quick post as the weather is looking decidedly iffy again. I spent the morning cleaning up and catching up on what I had to leave over two days of storms.

The bad storm was a direct hit on Corfu and our nearest neighbour islands. The centre of the island, where I live, did not get it as bad as others. We got most of the torrential rain, some hail and thunder but no wind. The north and south got the stormy seas and high winds, that some said terrified them. We also got the loudest single clap of thunder I have ever heard. I shot vertically off the settee, luckily my computer was not on my lap and I had just put my mug of tea safely on the table!

It makes an interesting adventure when you are up at 5am on your OH birthday, using the squeegee to push water down the steps outside to stop it flooding onto the wooden floors of the house. We worked together and just averted disaster in time. He did reward me with a cup of hot tea though. He had foiled my prepping plan of hearing the heavy rain start by closing our bedroom door when he went to the loo. The drains simply could not cope with the volume of water. I had left an empty bucket on the patio and it had nine inches of rain water in it, in the morning

Unfortunately the family further down the village were not so lucky, they were out a little later trying to get the water out of their downstairs rooms. It was torrential rain, which believe it or not shot past the broken rain drain in the street above us and did not come through our wall. The council are going to investigate......when, is anyones guess as its broken underground....and it may be under someones house...

Our roof repairs held up to the weather, not a drop came in from there:T

Several yachts in town got wrecked on the rocks in the storm and smashed to smithereens. A huge clear up has taken place in the north and the south of the island. We had storms yesterday, but mostly thunder and lightning and some high winds. We were told today would be sunny and clear . It was till about eleven thirty but now it looks very cloudy again and the storm clouds are very low.

Yesterday there were 8 water spouts in the channel between Corfu and Albania. I think there may be more today in this odd weather. Forecast for next week is to go back to the heatwave and it will last till the end of the month. Right, going to unplug again, it looks like the storms are coming......
  • Greek video of one of the water spouts off Corfu and one of the damaged yachts. The others were smashed to bits..

    DRUM ROLL PLEASE :)

I have just had a letter about our council tax. We are being re banded from B to A and we get a refund of £1828.67. We are using it to pay off the last of the mortgage which would have finished in December due to us overpaying for a few years. :j :j :j :j :j :j :j :j :j

Just wanted to add my congratulations a terrific achievement, and well done on the Council Tax revaluation you're the first person I've actually heard from who's done it.

Goodness 1Tonsil! That sounds just a bit too exciting. So glad you're okay so far, though feel so sorry for the family you mentioned further down. Thinking of you.

Doveling Welcome back! Glad you had a brilliant time, even if poor Anglesey didn't :rotfl: I have been eating mushrooms, but they were from Morrison's.
  • Was in Aldi today and they had the packs of 4 gas canisters reduced from£4.99 to £1.99,might be worth checking your local store if you need to stock up.

A report on the radio news today, said more people than ever are being arrested, on suspicion of terrorism offences.

    Two things occur to me.

    1. Being arrested doesn't make you guilty. what we need, is the figures for the number convicted in court.

    2. This sounds like another Hegelian Dialectic situation.

    Update on this.

In today's paper it says, of the 299 people arrested, only 52 defendants were proceeded against for terrorism-related offences, and only 42 were convicted.

It's looking more and more like the Hegelian Dialectic at work.

I think it looks like government departments trying to justify their budget, and sloppy journalism.

    Ditto.

....and theres plenty of sloppy journalism around. The number of times one particular paper I can think of talks about "families will be affected by such-and-such cut" and I instantly think "I wont be - as a single person" and read on further and realise they should have used the word household or person instead of "family" are legion....as it isn't just families that would get whatever-cut-it-is. They do have other words/phrases they routinely misuse as well.

I frequently feel the relevant journalist needs to be sat down with a lawyer or trade union official (ie professions that have to use the correct word/phrase) and getting them to change the wording to some that is more accurate.

Not just sloppy journalism, but sloppy police work. 299 people arrested 52 taken to prosecution and 42 convicted. So there are lots of people who could have nice payouts thanks to wrongful arrests or even prosecutions. There will certainly be many complaints that such arrests will have tarnished the reputations of those arrested.
