It's a TBBT joke.
I'm sure elona would have got it.I shall bow out for the evening as I am too tired to even work out that acronym. Or spell, as I have belatedly noticed up-thread. Laters, GQ x

TBBT is The Big Bang Theory.
The best sitcom ever. :cool:0 -
Your challenge for this evening is to explain what a Hegelian Dialectic is, in words even tired people like me can understand.
I did look it up yesterday but was too tired (or perhaps just too thick) to grasp it. :rotfl:
Hegel was a German philosopher, dialectic is a form of argument based on contradictions. A proposal is met with a counter proposal and the solution is a combination of points from both proposals. Hegel didn't actually use the model of argument that bears his name. In theory a dialectic is a method to achieve truth, in practise its often just a method to disguise truth or cloud the discussion.
Thesis+antithesis=synthesis was my shorthand for remembering Hegelian Dialectic. If memory serves Kant and Fichte use this model, Hegel had his head in a far less enlightened place.
Hopefully this makes some sense.0 -

Not to mention a very good footballer.

A small blue flag with a golden lion on it , only to be flown upside down when the apartment is in danger. Remembered it vaguely from Big Bang theory but had to google it to make sure.
I had a more vivid memory of the episode when the lift blew up etc."This site is addictive!"

It's used in the following way
A Government wants to introduce some Draconian Legislation, eg. something which will severely curtail citizen's freedoms and rights.
TPTB know it won't be popular, and will face strong opposition.
So, they invent a problem, say a heightened terrorism threat.
The public react by demanding the Government do something about this "threat".
The Government introduce a Bill, for their Draconian Legislation, confident that it will receive widespread public support, due to their invented "threat".
So, in simple terms, in order to impose a solution nobody will want, you invent a problem that can only be solved by that solution? The sneaky barstewards! And there was I thinking it was something out of the Hitchhiker' s Guide to the Galaxy......One life - your life - live it!0 -

I think it featured in Yes, Minister which would have been a lot funnier if it wasn't so accurate.0 -
OH, our DS and I are all currently watching re-runs of Yes, Prime Minister, and have observed that there is probably a lot of truth behind the comedy. Shocking, really. One life - your life - live it!0
