About ten years ago I had a bungalow on the edge of a council estate. One night my garage was broken into, so I made a lot of effort to secure it, including an electronic dog that barked if anyone came near it.
A few days later I was doing my gardening out the front, and the local schoolchildren ambled past after getting off the bus. Although I always said hello, a couple of them barked at me, so I guess I know who had been trying to get back in my garage.
I think it's pointless trying to cultivate feral people, and am pleased I no longer own that place.0 -

One of my neighbours (not 100% sure which one, know who it wasn't by the voice) just slammed into his flat after yelling at person unknown that he was an effing p***k and a see-you-next-tuesday.
Have no idea what that was all about. On the other hand, when neighbourhood elder SuperGran found she had a flat battery on her car, about 8 people, including some she barely knew to nod to, rallied around to push-start it for her. And if someone is stuck with a car prob, there will be knowledgeable peeps around to lend a hand or a tyre iron.
Most people around here are okay-ish. Some are no strangers to the inside of the criminal justice system, plenty of them drink more than is good for their livers, wallets or tempers. Some are medicated for pretty severe mental health problems and occasionally kick off and go away on a section for a wee rest. Some are on methadone scrips (I see them imbibing their little bottle of jollop down the pharmacy, in case you're wondering how I know that). A lot are into weeding and I ain't talking about tidying up the communal flowerbed, either.;)
But, if someone's in trouble, people are fast off the mark to rush out and sort it out, and we've had many a doorstep bonding session over mini-crises.
I wouldn't necessarily trust some of my neighbours to return a dropped wallet, but I would trust that if I screamed blue bliddy murder they wouldn't turn up the volume of their tellies and pretend nothing was happening. As I would do likewise for them.
In an urban area of high disadvantage, with a rapid turnover of neighbours, sometimes that's as good as it gets.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

That's great, thanks for that, I will transfer it to my Nook later.0 -
Regarding a SHTF scenario, no electricity so can't charge up a Nook, Kindle etc.
Does anyone know if you can buy some sort of charger which uses normally batteries to charge such items?
My daughter had a little cheap Simpsons charger which you inserted 3 AAA batteries to charge up her DS when on the move.
Unfortunately it isn't the same shaped connector as on my Nook/Kindle ie mini (or micro?) USB lead.0 -
Is the report delayed because they can't come out and make recommendations as involvement in Iraq still goes on? Awkward for the Govt?0

You could try something like this
