  • I don't think I'd sleep at night - literally - if I lived in a neighbourhood as "colourful" as yours Grey Queen. Guess you "could" call it edgy to try and put a positive spin on it...

A previous one of mine (back when I was renting) was quite "colourful" enough for me thank you - and I tended to find out more than I otherwise would of what was going on because mine was one of only two households in my particular little section of it that had phones. Add in that the other phone-owning household were obviously deemed stand-offish and...yep....there's someone at my doorbell again wanting to use my phone to help sort the latest crisis out would sometimes be the case. Fortunately, I was only on the receiving end of two more directly - ie a nearby neighbour taking drugs (of the recreational variety) and heading for my place:eek: and another neighbour not taking drugs (of the dealing with his schizophrenia variety) and smashing things up rather.

It didn't get to Peyton Place level (well...to my knowledge anyway:cool:). I got that when I got to work - and have been keeping people entertained since with tales of some of the incidents there :rotfl:.

Tell ya' its a lot quieter at work these days (work now being a couple of days a week of voluntary jobs I'm doing these days).
  • I guess you can get 'feral' behaviour in any community. A friend of He Who Knows who lives about 8 miles away saved him a cutting from the local paper that said the police were breaking up and addressing 'gangs' of youths in this village who were collecting in ever increasing numbers on the open public spaces (we have several) and on the largest estate here and were drug dealing, were increasingly noisy and disruptive in the evenings/night, were climbing into gardens of houses that back onto the open areas and generally being complete hooligans. I haven't picked up any of this, we do have one extremely noisy car being driven recklessly and backfiring etc, usually late evening when the place is quiet, the police DID say in the article though that on an individual basis these youngsters were as nice as pie, very appologetic and easy to deal with, but the larger the number gathered together the noisier and bigger the problem and the more outrageous the behaviour of the group!

Regarding a SHTF scenario, no electricity so can't charge up a Nook, Kindle etc.

Does anyone know if you can buy some sort of charger which uses normally batteries to charge such items?

My daughter had a little cheap Simpsons charger which you inserted 3 AAA batteries to charge up her DS when on the move.

Unfortunately it isn't the same shaped connector as on my Nook/Kindle ie mini (or micro?) USB lead.

The Nook is a micro USB connector (which I've never seen the advantage of, more cables to carry/organise) I have a Portapow which takes AA cells and charges USB devices and has the advantage of a standard USB socket, so you'd only need the cables that match your device.
I also have a small solar panel which charges a powerbank which in turn can be used to charge USB chargeable devices (the panel would charge them directly but is far slower).

I agree you can get feral behaviour in any group of people. Just look at how feral some members of the Bullingdon club were and are today?

There is a different mentality when mobs form and that can be dangerous but many are only doing it to not be victimised themselves. As for gangs of children, if they have no outlets like youth clubs then they can become "feral". I suspect that cut backs which probably impact poorer communities harder, whereas richer communities have better resources at home for their kids to not worry about the closure of a youth club, as the tykes can play on their Xbox instead.

That said there is more of a community in many poorer communities whereas in richer communities there is a sense of "I'm alright jack." It does depend on the people in that community.
It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.

That Porta Pow is exactly what I was looking for and in my price range. That would also charge my power bank too.

    Cheers!

    ;)

    You're very welcome.
My solar panel (4.8AH) was about £20 delivered and the powerbank was even less (I think £12). The Nook charges in 2-3 hours (depending how just how much reading I've done that week) and my phone takes a similar time, thankfully I have an older smartphone that generally manages about 5 days between charges.
