My new slow cooker is fantastic ! Easier to use and clean and just what I needed. Going to make some ham and pea soup tomorrow in it, as we have a visitor coming to help with my OH s computer and he might be here for hours.....
I also love my slow cooker. It makes everything so straight forward. My personal pride of joy is my throw together chilli which I make so much off that I can make up to 18 days worth of meals. I keep these in the freezer for when I need it.

Though the prepper in me realises that there may not always be constant power to run a slow cooker. So my solution is a big heavy stockpot and wonder bag. Should things really go bad this combo can be used over a wood fire or portable gas stove and then left to cook in the wonder bag anywhere.

And it was getting very uncomfortable reading posts that had a dig about our way of life and the area that is our home..

The responding posts have been mostly general thoughts and experiences of people moving to different areas/countries..which I personally think should all be taken on board especially if SHTF and you got to flee/ move to a totally different area/ lifestyle you are accustomed to.. And the main n agreement is,, do not pith your neighbours off if you are an incomer to an area..

  • Wonderbags are amazing, thanks to Memory Girl I was inspired to make one from what I already had in the house and it works superbly, the only fuel expended is in bringing the contents of your casserole to the boil and holding them at simmering for 20 minutes or so and then when placed in the wonderbag and the strings tightened it's left for a few hours and cooks even pulses to perfection using insulation and residual heat. The food does need to be brought up to the boil again if you are eating it hot but it's the very best way I know of cooking chickpeas, which take a very long time to soften if you boil them on the hob. A very useful kitchen aid under any circumstances but I would imagine in a SHTF scenario invaluable!

I do hope that I have not said anything to offend you or Wales? Personally I think wales and its people are lovely and great to camp in. In earlier years I camped in the Brecon Beacons and up in North Wales near Snowdonia, I had a great time and hope to do it again one day.

While some jokes about the Welsh and livestock might be a little over the top at times it does not mean that we think that any Welsh person actually engage in the process. It is like the Scottish being mean when they can be as generous as anyone else I know. It is an old stereotype and we do not mean it as an insult. Sorry.

  • I don't often comment but I've felt the need to as mtttm was feeling bullied as I read it and my advice is to speak up straight away rather than let things build up. That most things are misunderstanding and can usually be sorted. But we all think our ways are best. That depending on what you prefer you might read a map with a compass like granny showed you or download an app. It's what works for you. Not what you tell me I should do.

Also on another thread they had been told to stop a conversation they were having with someone by a bystander so things don't sound nice and I was trying to offer a different point of view as it is hard when your in the situation to see other points of view. They don't seem happy and have posted a lot on what is going on but sometimes you have to go along to get along. This isn't being weak or backing down but picking battles and not getting caught up in what isn't important really. I didn't mean to cause offense to anyone or in anyway hound someone off. I'll step away from this. But will say the world is made up of all different personalities points of views and experiences and all are valid. Just cos I won't agree with most of them doesn't make me right automatically and speaking and using friends as a sounding board would bring me to the same conclusion I think much like this forum.

    Apologies for any offence caused.
  • Just watching the BBC news... They are now taking about the slow down in China, Japan etc.. And saying it is good for us at the moment?? And it will be 18 months plus before we will feel the effects???

The forum seems to have stopped sending me emails so I keep missing big wodges of posts. The winter of 2009/10 was the bad one wasn't it? We had four and a half feet of snow and it lay on the ground frozen for 5 weeks. We hit -17 here. I better knit a wee bit faster I think :)

It does seem to need clarifying, for some people, that I'm "judging as I find" on individual people in whatever area I happen to be in. There are, obviously, good and bad everywhere and I have friends in both areas and see good and bad points in both areas.

It has not been easy, in some ways, to adapt to a new area because it wasn't totally a free choice to move - but it is what it is and we all live where we can afford to.

There has been/is an unfortunate set of circumstances in regard to the particular house I bought. I chose the best house for my circumstances I could afford and soon found out why the last owner of my house felt the way I have been told she did about the longstanding neighbour I have here (I was told that she hated her in fact). There were/are disputes with this neighbour that the vendor didn't tell me about. That neighbour has been trying to "tell me what to do" ever since I moved here and I am more inclined to stand up for myself than previous owners of my house were and hence there are times (like this week) where they've just had "yet another go" at me and I'm probably not in the worlds best mood from having had to cope with another onslaught from them.

But, as stated, I take people as I find them - wherever I happen to be and it seems best to make that quite clear.
