MITSTM, your links don't work for me, but googling the same does work, same links come up via G as well - bizarre! We run a Mac and ipad, and don't seem to have the same problems as the peeps with w!ndow$.
I use p!nterest a fair bit, and have found an increasing number of pins around the subject of prepping. A big US bias, and more than a few are borderline extreme prep/insanity, but very useful. I'm going to print out the most useful info and create a proper file, which I can access without t'internet - no point having all that lovely info and no way to use it!

The beta test program had monitoring software as part of the install - it monitored how the software was used - hardly unusual for development code. There is a feedback mechanism in the final version which can be switched off.Makes me glad I am using a 13 y.o. PC with a very obsolete operating system. My Computer Wizard detests Windoze. He has one PC running it because he occasionally codes for customers using it, but otherwise loathes it. When this great putty-coloured behemoth finally goes the way of all tech, I think I might be looking at Linux. Would have to have a play-around with it first, to make sure I could cope with the change.Wonder if the site is misbehaving on some OS and not others or it's something to do with what servers you're on? Where is nuatha when we need him?!
Its made no difference whether I've been at a *nix box or an MS box over the last two days. (I don't do Macs as a rule and not at home) I've had regular outages whether I've been logged in or on the new design.0 -
...and the latest news re the Calais Problem is that those in charge there are saying that these latest attempts to break through now look as if they are co-ordinated.
It's just gone up a level again then - not disparate people trying off their own individual bat to get through. They are being organised...
Surely the French bean-counters must be counting the cost by now of all those riot police and, hopefully, setting it off against any profits they are making from keeping the Tunnel open.
Fingers crossed that some bean-counter somewhere sits down and works out a balance sheet of cost/benefit analysis of keeping that Tunnel open and decides its not worth it ...and going to turn into one heck of a loss-making operation at some point soon if they keep trying to keep it open.0 -
I'm on windows 8, and haven't had any probs at all with the forum.0

Did anyone else watch 'Tut' at the weekend? I thought it was amazing, and was so sad when Tut's girlfriend Suhad was strangled by his horrible wife/sister.
Crikey, you'd think she would have got herself a flat in town after her rival tried to burn her to death.
I've been trying to find out if Suhad was a real person, or just invented for the programme. Anyone know?0 -

Apologies, I should have been more specific yesterday, when I remembered the site had gone back to being irresponsive (and hasn't been smooth this last hour).
Try Puppy Linux its designed to run well on old hardware and will probably fly on your behemoth. It can be booted from a Live CD (IIRC you have a writer) or even better from a USB drive, which would then allow you to save files and give you a complete portable environment to take with you and use on your brother's system without his annoying setup. (I'd recommend a 1GB or larger USB pen drive, but I carry a lot of data and custom software. 512MB would give you Puppy and the full Open Office with lots of space, 128MB would give you Puppy and a lightweight Office app, with 20MB of space for your files.
Other distributions are available, I have no connection other than being a satisfied user.
The big advantage of a live distribution is that it works from the computer's RAM, switch it off and there is no recoverable trace (from the computer) of what you were doing.
Give it a whirl and see how you get on.
Though when the behemoth dies (may it be many moons or more) it may be worth considering a laptop, under £100 will currently buy you a good used i3 with decent ram/hard drive and Windows 7 which isn't a difficult move from XP.

MTSTM, I prolly get followed around W&rose by their store detectives as definately don't look the target demographic. Ours is frequented by two Types and one outlier.

Don't knock W&trose; to my astonishment it can be cheaper than some of the discounts on occasion and sometimes has really good YS goods if you are good at using unexpected ingredients.
For example since Ldl stopped doing split peas, I notice W&trose do them at 55p, one pence more expensive than Nito.
And they are often the cheapest source of nice vinegar for pickling. Last few summers they have offered cider vinegar @ 87p for a half litre.
I was going ask if anyone spotted the offer to YELL 'cos I tend to miss it with work being manic at this time of year.
On the YS front I have had smashing loaded chilli plant for 10p and 4 Aberdeen Angus no fat burgers @50p the lot. and some cheap veggies. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
