If anyone is going near Nito, I spotted anchovies at 10p per tin at the weekend. Short date (August 15) but good for pasta sauce, !!!!aladiare and bean salads.

:) Hi daz, was just thinking the other day that I hadn't seen you posting lately. Hope all is well with you.

What's the size of these little corned beef tins, please? I may have to go to the land of the poond to check it out.

also watch out for those of you who don't like mustard I didn't read tin and in small writing it says in mustard so when opened instead of the white fat usually on c beef it was yellow fat, not in all tins mind you but be careful to read which one has mustard x

:) I've a 20 y.o. Br@bantia one which quails at nothing, inc the FB corned beef or tinned pie tins. Although I open the corned beef with the key if it has it.

I'm using up some tinned fish because I bought large sizes and take 2-3 meals to get through them as a singleton. If the leccy is off temporarily, I'd be keeping the fridge cold to keep the coldness in. If it was off longer-term, I shall need foodstuffs which can live outside the fridge without growing harmful bacteria very rapidly, or are small enough to eat in one sitting.

When my Nan was slinging out her old metal meat safe, long since demoted to her wash house, I claimed it for my own shed. I use it as a vermin-proof place to keep my veggie seeds, but I have a longer term plan to bring it down to the flat, if necessary, to use as a larder..

I think a lot of us moderns are a bit deskilled when it comes to managing food without the blessing of a fridge and perhaps also a freezer. Would be good to mug up on few skills. I am thinking of getting a couple of those foldable mesh food covers, to keep flies off cooling foods. The rigid mesh domes are better, imo, but my tiny home hasn't got houseroom for them.

Flies are filthy disease-bearing creatures and we need to keep them off our grub.

When IdiotExBoyfriend and I moved out of his flat & into a house, we didn't have a fridge for about a month so I stored milk etc in the pantry in a bowl of cold water. We did have easy access to shops so just bought as much 'chilled' stuff as we needed.

Today I transferred my BOB from my shed to the boot of my car.

As you guys know, I have a number of rental flats dotted around Reading. On Saturday I heard on the radio that the centre of town was closed due to a big accident. As it turned out, I was able to get home via the M4, but it reminded me of the time in 2009 I had to walk 4 miles home in the snow.

At the moment, my BOB contains sleeping bag & blow up bed, a change of clothes, towels & wash gear. I'm trying to think of some (low fat) food I could keep in the car, so I can spend the night at a flat if necessary. So far I have a tin of baked beans. Any other suggestions?

You need to work out what your objective is. If it is getting home then you need very different things from a bug out bag. Personally I think get home bags are very underrated.

I would consider a hammock or tent in there as well as you might need to cross country to get home. That could involve a trek across countryside. You already have a sleeping bag and air mattress.

Put a stash of cash in there as credit cards might be offline. Only a few months ago RBS had problems processing credit cards. Cash will have less problems. Keep a range of notes and coins for every possible eventuality including phone boxes. You could also use a hotel or Travelodge for a night.

Then I would keep some water in a container so you could make tea coffee and rehydrate any dried meals. You will need a small gas or alcohol stove to boil water, and pans for any canned goods. etc. No mention of a can opener? There are lots of dehydrated meals that you can use for emergency meals. A Kelly kettle with some wood would also give you some warmth if ever snowed in. Or you have broken down somewhere remote. An axe to get more firewood would also help. A simple 12volt travel kettle will also provide you with hot drinks and no need to light any fires.

For winter add a mylar emergency blanket and extra cold weather clothing. Plus add a lot more food and water if you are going anywhere remote as it could be several weeks before your car is found after snow drifts. If you kept a small sledge for snowy weather in the car you could put all the weight in that and dragged it home as the weight is on the ground you would not be top heavy with a rucksack so less likely to fall over.

Add a solar panel to recharge the phone and see if you can attach it to the outside of a rucksack to recharge during the day.
It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.

    Thanks Frugalsod.

All good ideas, but I need some room in my car boot for tools & building materials. It's about one third full with SHTF equipment at the moment. :)
