Omigod, kittie, you poor thing. You sound utterly frazzled, and I think you're completely right when you say that this is the biggest shtf of all :( I just read your 2nd post, where you can have a little sob, a little time out, and even now learning to use new skills like the satnav. Thats absolutely admirable! Sending positive vibes...

I'm so sorry for your loss Kittie. Though it seems never-ending paperwork wise, I recall when dealing with my Dads death that all of a sudden there wasn't a form left to fill out or an official to deal with, the mountain had passed. Frankly I was astounded what had to be done that way and feel for you there greatly, there was no way mum could have done it.

That level of frugality does at least have an end, when you have cleared the mortgage. Though if this house will suit you for the rest of your life then no need to be as frugal.

I can happily go without alcohol if necessary, and cheap tea is acceptable but I will admit I have the odd treat. Last week it was Venison pate. I am moving more towards making my own cleaning products as they are greener and less damaging to the environment as well as cheaper. As long as you are happy with your arrangement that is all that matters. I have nothing against treats as they make it all worth while. It is much easier to maintain a frugal regime if it gives you the extra spending power to have some luxury.

That's the thing really, extreme frugality needs a light at the end of the tunnel. I'm happy though to be generally frugal, since frankly it's just good sense and a lack of wastefulness. As regards cleaning products, didn't find anything homemade to be as good as a dash of washing up liquid in hot water! There's very little I don't clean with that. And I might go back to homemade laundry detergent, I liked the smell of just clean soap above all else, it was just inconvenient to have 10 litres of the stuff in the flat!

I do however love my twinings (purchased when they go on half price special) and think your pate would be lovely with a $5 merlot ;).

Moneyistooshorttomention, I think we're settling in fine.... will tell you better when I'm less exhausted!

  • We must be the luckiest people I know, we've just had a neighbour knock on the door and give us a complete tree trunk, cherry from the look of it, and all the wood from some building work and alterations they have just had done, another half a crate full for next year at the very least, brilliant stuff and very gratefully received.
  • I am back safe at home and done my round trip. I swear that my hubbie is looking after me, no-one tail gated me. Wierdly had an orange what I thought was a mini, with a diagonal stripe (like a smile) on each side of the radiator. It followed me almost all the way there, at a distance. Then on the way back was an identical car, only cream and it did the same

Had the car washed, something else for me as dh always did it and had lunch with dd in her lunch break. I felt so uplifted afterwards that I was humming `brown girl in the ring` all the way home. I noticed so many small grey haired women in the car park, some driving bigger cars than you might expect, as though it had been the couples car. I am so so happy that I have got myself mobile

Another thing that I am happy about is that I have always looked after my hubbie`s sipp, his main pension, moved it, vested it and made it grow. I did it legally ie he signed the form to say I could, like a financial advisor. I quickly bought up more shares yesterday and put limit buys on others and then phoned them. I am very happy to say that they have not changed anything (yet) and I can still access the site, they have deceased by his name so it has been logged

I hope I sleep tonight, our single beds were always pushed together and I couldn`t tuck my duvet in properly. I am going to bite the bullet tonight and put a few inches gap in between. I was cold and wakeful

Look up sodium bicarbonate cold cure. I did it yesterday and today and my starter cold has gone. An amazing old way of alkalising the body to make it unattractive to cold bugs

Well done you, kittie :) thats very empowering. About a year after my sister's husband died, an elderly woman said to her "You can have a good life. Not the one you wanted or planned for, or thought you were going to have, but it can still be a good one".

Baby steps: that was a big day out today! Glad you got to touch base with your DD.

I feel healthy enough to really get back into the swing of things now: I've just done some gardening, weeding, really, after planting some garlic last week. And since my library now has online books (its too far of a walk for me right now, on top of everything else) I managed to sign up for them, and the first one I leafed through was "21st century smallholder", which I like the sound of :) basic, but tell you the issues.

  • Kittie, I lurk on this thread, but I just wanted to say you are an inspiration to all of us.

My Mum, who was a great believer, said Dad was with her for 3 months after he died and then left. Now I don't know the ins and outs, but all I can say when you have been married as long as you have and your other half dies, I am sure you must still feel he is watching over you, and that must be a comfort.

    Much love

Being a Spiritualist, I'got a different view of death to most people, so I tend to keep quiet about it in case I upset anybody. But know that I'm sending you love, light, and strength kittie pet xx You were the one person who got me into prepping.

Somehow this prepping has gone wrong.
