I know I never personally knew Kittie's husband, but this is now the third death of a male that I have had in the last month. Two were friends fathers. One told me by text message, the other on Monday emailed me.

You just never know when you have to leave this earth!

I decided to buy a food dehydrator as I fancy the idea of making beef jerky.

I am going to use it to dry mushrooms, as I always seem to run out at the last minute, also other veg.

Plus, if the SHTF I would have food that could be stored for years if need be. I would use my Foodsaver to seal it in jars.

I have looked at the food dehydrating thread, but not a lot happening there.

Can anyone who uses one of the smaller dryers direct me to a good thread, site that they use please.

I bought this one from Andrew James ebay outlet, saved me paying postage costs. I fancied the shape and the fact that it has a timer.

Do many people use theirs to dry frozen veg?

sb44 I would look carefully at what you want to dehydrate and search accordingly. Google and youtube are pretty good sources for ideas.

Beef jerky is apparently easy and highly successful as long as you eliminate the fat. Youtube has lots of videos on making beef jerky.

If you cannot find the exact answer experiment.
It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.
  • SB44 I'm still a novice with my dehydrator, however we've found sliced mushrooms, cooked beetroot, small plum tomatoes (cut in two) and chillies (cut open and seeds removed) very easy and they dry well. However, most of the time ours is used for making dried fruit - pears, bananas and apples sliced very very very thinly and they sort of caramelise. Blueberries and cucumber were awful. Good luck and let us know how you get on...

My nephew died on Monday, aged 51, five years after the cancer diagnosis that accurately predicted its timespan, and just hours after being moved from home to hospice. Perhaps it's a luxury to have had time to accept it was coming... his young son will barely remember the time before the illness.

One of the good guys, and isn't it always the way.

So sorry to hear your news twiglet. It's never easy whichever way it happens, is it? Sending love and hugs and remembering you and your family in my prayers, too.

  • You are such sweet and lovely people and that is one of the things I have been learning over the past two days, the outstanding kindness of people to someone in trouble. All we hear on the media are the bad things but there is a huge caring population around us. That alone is incredibly uplifting

Today has been better, my family has been all around and are staying in shifts, bringing food and the husbands doing all that is needed with paperwork, which is a lot. We have done a huge amount of talking and shared tears and hugs. The phone has been so busy with people ringing

Most things are now organised and I have done some tidying around the house, important to keep a bit busy just now

I know I have had two contacts from my husband. Yesterday I was sitting in a chair gazing out of a window and a tree about 100 m away suddenly developed what looked like clear shimmering baubles. There was no rain, the baubles were swaying too and fro and they stayed for 20 minutes. Today my daughter was reading an e mail to me from her friend who was left a sign 3 days after her father passed and exactly at that time, as though a message needed to be given to me, I had a cold sensation down my back and tingles all the way down through my legs. Like when he stroked my back if passing me when he was alive. My daughter also had a visitation yesterday, when a kestrel, never seen by her house, perched on the window cill right at the end of her 5 year old daughter`s bed. They opened the window and the kestrel flew in

    I feel much comforted
