Have you SEEN the news reports about the snow in New York State???

Not something you would want to be unprepared for.

There's a girl's basketball team who have been trapped on a coach for a day - they still have mobile signal so are posting selfies and they say that they've run out of water so they are going to have to start using snow. But so far they're not starving, they've got granola bars etc, bet they are glad they at least had some supplies
 1.5 metres already and another metre expected tonight. Seven dead already.

Can barely get my head around snow in that kind of quantity. One poor soul who died in his car was buried under 5m of snow - terryifying.

Sending all good wishes to those out there, and those elsewhere with family and friends in the affected areas.

Seems storm season is well and truly upon us here in SE Queensland. Brisbane and surrounds were hit by flooding, apparently even a tornado and there were thunderstorms all round. We got a heck of a thunderstorm, but otherwise not much.

Nothing changes here, but you do get used to it!

That is unbelievable must be so scary. Everything grinds to a halt here if we get a foot of snow just imagine if we got that much. Doesn't bear thinking about really:sad:

Sadly for them, it has come in so fast and so widespread that they are finding it hard to cope.

I have just seen a news report where they said some communities were cut off as the snow plough can't even get through the 'solid wall of snow', they were calling in the national guard and declaring a state of emergency.

Poor souls, will keep them in my prayers tonight.

Absolutely. Poor people, can't imagine being caught in that. Hope there aren't anymore deaths due to it. Will be thinking about them:(

    Helloaaa!

    Silly girls.

I think some people don't seem to feel the cold. I've been in my Crombie coat all month with a jumper under that, but even today some people were wandering around Reading with bare arms. (Showing off their tattoos maybe? :) )

A neighbour to the flat I'm working on wears a T shirt all year round.

:) Well, I was gardening in shirtsleeves last Saturday but I am a woman of a certain age, with additional central heating.

Have been scrolling thru pix of the snow on the Daily Fail's website. One which had me laughing and wanting to smack the idiot was of a driver going down the road with a 4ft high block of uncleared snow perched on the roof of his car.

Hmmm, what could possibly go wrong there.......?

I live in a part of the UK where even an inch of snow causes chaos. It is all relative. Much of the US is used to snow, though this extreme is beyond most peoples expectations. Though this is why you prep. If you are isolated by snow for several months you can cope. My concerns are for those in areas which rarely get snow like Texas and they simply are not prepared for it.
It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.
  • I'd be so worried about livestock; I know a lot died when they had a sudden cold snap a couple of years ago, before the farmers were even thinking of getting them in. Also, I can just remember the winter of '62-63, when we lived on the western slopes of Dartmoor, hearing the sheep trapped in snowdrifts coughing mournfully - and sheep can cough more alarmingly than any other being - and seeing the lucky ones shake themselves free after days, sometimes weeks, stuck in there. But at least sheep have woolly coats; a steer or a horse doesn't have much to keep the cold out.
