I am looking at the idea of getting a solar dehydrator, which eliminates the power problem. I think having both options is probably the best overall. When it is sunny use the solar dehydrator otherwise the electrical variety.
I do like your idea of keeping the dried food in Kilner jars for long term storage. How long do they generally last in the jars?
Not sure how long they would last long term,I buy up veg when it's cheap then use it through the winter.i suppose if you used the oxygen absorber sachets they would last years.I used to vacuum pack them in bags and that worked well, but I find putting the veg in jars is less time consuming.0 -
You can make one Frugalsod, my Grandmother in law has and hers works very well.

I am not sure that I am up to the skill to make one right now but as the dehydrator is also a future project then I suspect that I will be ready to make one by then as well. Many thanks for the link. It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0 -

To be honest I would only want to use them over the following months for up to a year pretty similar to what you are doing. It would help even out food costs, so it may not be an issue for me. Thanks for clearing that up. Kilner jars look like a very simple option.
For camping I can prepare literally a few days ahead and so long term storage is not an issue. It only has to stay edible for a month at most.
If I wanted a much longer solution then yes oxygen absorbers and mylar bags might also be a way ahead, though I will look at that as a separate issue. It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0 -
Well I needed to do a mini shop. So I did an online shop with T's and ordered 45 rolls of toilet paper so should be able to cope if snowed in this winter. I will do a bigger top up shop early next year so it is unlikely that I will run out of toilet paper before then, especially as I have enough paper to last me till 2015 already.
Best of all T now do even cheaper delivery options from only a £1. So I have a late night delivery tomorrow. It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0 -

Evening all.
Been having a light supper and contemplating some info passed to me a couple of hours ago by SuperGran. One of our delightful neighbours has been overheard in the middle of the night, in his flat, screaming and shouting about how he is going to set the effing place on fire and burn all of us effers to death in our effing beds.
Lovely. There's a hundred flats here and most of us don't know this geezer from a bar of soap but he's prepared to kill us over some imagined slight? He oughta count his lucky stars I wasn't the one who overheard that little gem or I'd've had the Polis on the phone in seconds and hopefully down here tout de suite.
We once had a neighbour set the gas off deliberately, blew a huge chunk out of the side of the block and cost several people their homes. And my family wonder why I keep a go-bag in my bedroom...!
I can't even be bothered to stress about it anymore, am ready to evac at a moment's notice anyway. The feller who told SG about it has been given strict instructions to treble-9 it if it happens again.
Mebbe the treasure will manage to fall into the river on his way home from the pub next time.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

LOL, we obviously live in similar districts! I have just been to the local supermarket, followed all the way by some deranged, but utterly harmless soul shouting at me to stop following him!, get away from him and hoping I should die shortly. You just have to laff at it all doncha ? Yours sounds a bit more serious tho :eek:0 -

I'm glad I don't live in the only place with nuts and loose screws. SG is speculating that the bloke is getting grief from the council over owing rent. It's purest speculation as we have no real knowledge bar that she can see that he spends virtually every waking hour down the pub and that doesn't come cheap. But, of course, if he is drinking his rent money, it's got to be someone else's fault, right? I've never seen the arrears officer but SG knows him by sight and he's a big bloke, apparently..........:rotfl:Prolly got a pocketful of knuckledusters and thumbscrews to pile on the pressure.
I won't let it keep me up at nights. We all have smoke detectors and you can hear them from further afield than the flat they're ringing in, and people pop out of their doors like cuckoos out of cuckoo clocks when they hear one of them go off. High density housing is no place to ignore such things.
Our water main is still holding together, that's over a week now. Another one broke elsewhere in the city today.
Oh, and my Dad informs me that on this day in 1971 two things happened; 3-4 inches of snow fell and they got the offer of a council house...........it's the little things which keep history real, innit? And we moved 8 days before Xmas and I was such a little PITA they enrolled me into primary school before crimble.
I suspect I was underfoot, asking Why?? all the time and climbing in and out of boxes. Plus ca change, plus ca meme chose.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Have you SEEN the news reports about the snow in New York State???
Not something you would want to be unprepared for.
There's a girl's basketball team who have been trapped on a coach for a day - they still have mobile signal so are posting selfies and they say that they've run out of water so they are going to have to start using snow. But so far they're not starving, they've got granola bars etc, bet they are glad they at least had some suppliesIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0
