MrsLW, that's what reassured me about sauerkraut, the idea that if it goes wrong it's a smell that will outlast religion and you can't possibly eat it by mistake!

I had a dehydrator, but didn't find it particularly good for us. I think had we been growing our own food to dry, it would have been an economical way to preserve it, but for the prices things are here, it didn't pan out. For those who are interested in trying it, google solar dryer. You can make one yourself and I believe sun in England would be fine.

I think as long as you can make some edible dough with flour, doesn't matter what it is. It all soaks up the gravy!

:) Have a nice knitting day, Mar.

Me and my colleagues have been speculating as to what the hell is going on with the water mains in this city as there has been the minimum of one burst per day for the past 2 weeks, sometimes more. Peeps always ring the council instead of the water company when these things happen, so we always know.

Water/ lec, makes you wonder if lack of infrastructure investment following privatisation is starting to come home to roost.

Are the bursts ever near places where they burst previously GQ?

This seems to happen with electric cables. Of course if you cut a PVC cable to insert a new bit, it will never be as robust as the original cable that lasted forty years. The flat I'm working on has had the block mains cable repaired twice in the same place in the last year.

I would guess that the same goes for water pipes?

Did you see the doom and gloom headlines from David Cameron today? Not that it comes as any surprise to anyone who has been looking about them - but why is he telling us this now?
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

Getting his excuses in early - after all he's blaming the world economy - so it won't affect his chances of re-election. Though the fact that politicians are warning of prpblems make me suspect their expecting far worse.

    I agree with nuatha :)

I've just received an email from the environment agency with a groundwater flood alert. ANd lots of graphs. Better keep on with dredging the vegetation out of my streams and move the sandbags to somewhere more sensible then!
  • Hi GREENBEE I'm off to visit that Zebra on Thursday en route to DD1 for a cathedral concert and DD2 is making Ikea noises over the phone so if you'd still like a Sunnan lamp I'm very happy to pick one up for you? We could find a mutually convenient time to meet half way like we did last time and have coffee in that lovely little tea room again? Let me know if you do, Lyn xxx.

Re bread - I make "no Knead" sourdough

Sourdough is a bit of a knack to get perfect but generally edible what ever you do.

A friend gave me some starter, but it isn't that hard to make - just flour, water .... and patience.

I then mix it in a bowl (1 cup starter, 1 cup water, 1lb flour, 0.5 tsp of salt and a dollop of honey - maybe a tsp). mix altogether with a spoon / whisk using hands at the end for a minute or so.

Cover and leave for 12 - 15 hours. Stretch it out on a surface, fold into 3 lengthwise and then in half. Dump in tin, leave for 1.5 hours and then bake in a dutch oven. Sounds faffy but really isn't - it is sublime, lasts for a couple of weeks for toasting if you can resist it.
I wanna be in the room where it happens
