Given how simple it is to make, I can't wrap my head around buying it.

The shop sauerkraut is pasteurised so it doesn't have any of the bacteria that makes the home-made stuff so good for you.

    Thanks for that jko.

Parliament also needs to kick the Rememberancer out as well. The rememberancer is an official lobbyist who sits behind the Speaker's chair and ensures that, whatever our elected representatives might think, the City's rights and privileges are protected.

Oh, I agree. The 'Rememberancer' sounds like a character from 'True Blood' doesn't he? :)
  • Not me with the sauerkraut, I tried and had an abysmal failure the smell of which could have felled giants at 20 miles!!! I believe KITTIE makes sauerkraut and makes preserves using lactic fermentation she might be able to give you tips to make it work. I do buy commercial sauerkraut though, sometimes in jars and sometimes in tins and it's delicious with smoked sausages, ham or bacon and usually so cheap it's silly, Lyn xxx.

Hi Everyone :hello: Dh and I have been prepping for a couple of years now and every site I go on from the US suggests a dehydrator for fruits and veg. Does anyone here have one and do they find them useful. Seems like a lot of money to waste if I wouldn't use it :)

  • Not only do I make & love kimchi (haven't tried sauerkraut) I also run a dehydrator! I do use it, pretty regularly, for things like apple crisps (yum - but we have 4 apple trees) and anything we have a glut of; it's great just to be able to whip out a jar of, say, dried celery, field mushroom or crumbled nettle to add to soups & stews. As we're a large household, currently 6 adults living at home, I have a bigger L'Equip 6-tray one & every tray gets used most of the time. When the kids were younger, I used to make fruit leathers for their lunch boxes too & that was always very popular.

Hi smo3. I bought a nine tray Excalibur about two years ago and have dried quite a lot. I have solar panels and work at home so for me the operation makes financial sense - I choose to dry when the sun shines so the electricity is free. The nine tray is definitely too big for me but it was an absolute snip and I know I could sell it on or swap for the five tray. I think it only makes sense if you grow a lot of your own food or have free power like me, or both. They do create a lot of condensation and you would need to have a window open so for me drying is an absolute no-no after September as I loathe the cold! What I find really good is that I can choose the time to prepare the vegetables when they are cheap or free. I can then chuck a whole load of already prepared goodies into the slow cooker with a joint or stew at a time when I am too busy to chop.

boultdj I love dried fruit in my porridge too

thriftwizard I only have one small tree but my mum grows loads of plums, damsons, blackcurrants etc and half of them go to waste so thats why I thought dehydrator sounded good.

How long can the fruits etc be stored for ?

Living proof it was a 5 tier I was looking at and as you say buying fresh fruit and veg when they are cheaper and drying them makes sense both financially and from a prepping point. Think I will keep an eye on fleabay etc see if I can pick one up going cheap.
    Thanks for the advice.:)
