Oh boy,I've been absent for a few days, and have 15 pages to catch up on!
:D Have you got a note from your mother to say you could be excused? :rotfl:

Lovely to see you back with us, Softstuff. Re Non-Food Poker, I have 106 rolls of loo paper, can you beat that? (answer, probably).

For persons who weren't around when this nonsense started, Food Poker and Non-Food Poker were a bit of a running gag ages ago; it's a bragathon of who has the most of an individual category of stocks. Softstuff is an advanced practictioner.

:D If you're very naughty, we might just have to bring Nursie out of retirement. She's rattling the bars of her cage, even as we speak......

:( I read that on ZH too.

Stealing from the citizenry without even the pretext of drafting taxation laws or waiting until you've convicted them of something is the ultimate admission of a failed state. It's something which dictators and their bully boys do when they have no fear of the rule of law.

Poor old US-ers, they're going down the tubes fast, with us hanging on their coat tails. We will have to follow another ZH meme and start having 'boating accidents' with hard assets aboard.
I did see signs of the collapse in the US a decade ago, and said so to friends. They now agree with me. It is the same here but we have some significant advantages in that we are not the reserve currency nation so have to deal with problems earlier, and our political system is not so flawed as the US one.

I have diversified from just the plain loo roll and now have an additional stock of moist toilet wipes (after the hubby had some issues with piles.... TMI??). I fear you may have me beat with 106 rolls of the standard. But I'll raise you a selection of razor blades would make Mr Boots himself envious (when people pass on we end up with unused razor blades and cloth hankies, go figure).

I'm ignoring your threat about Nursie and allaying my fears with a nice glass of wine (it is evening here just y'know).

Re smart meters - British Gas are making everyone have them. And Thames Water are making everyone change to a water meter over the next few years, whether we want to or not. Our area will be the first to get them - TW are going to start fitting them here early next year.

Thames Water did have a huge problem with leaks so have they fixed that problem or is this a way for them to cut usage so that they do not have to fix the pipes or impose water restrictions?

:D I have lots of cloth hankies, too, but a complete lack of wipes.

I also have to go to work now, wah! Enjoy your vino, you lucky dawg.

Oh boy,I've been absent for a few days, and have 15 pages to catch up on!

Same here. My computer had a corrupted internet connection set up so needed a complete reinstall. I had everything backed up but it still took days to rebuild my drives because there was so much to reinstall. First attempted failed 36 hours into the rebuild but second attempt worked and less than two hours after completing I am clearing the backlog.

In fact my mail folder took an hour to reimport the 363 000 messages and then download the 500 or so new ones while I was offline.

The good thing is that my back up system was up to date and working and so it has only been a delay. Next year I need to sort out a better back up for my data but I have a solution in mind for then.

is there a point where one's parents cease to act on the "they know best" principle about their children's lives? I get mine will always think it, it's the random acting on it that I'm keen to get beyond. (LL aged 43 and three quarters, mother of 2, gainfully employed full-time, trusted to make business decisions, and manager of staff, independently living for 25+ years, completed higher education to post-doctoral level, home-owner, pension and life insurance provision on track). If not now - when?

I've just found out, sadly... suddenly mine are deferring to me and my assorted sibs & step-sibs, as my stepfather slides gently down that final hill and my mother's too busy nursing him full time to attend to minor details like why half my children have failed to realise the necessity of going to university, which has been one of her biggest worries in life up to now. They are 88 & 89, and I'm 55, and finally I'm the grown-up around here, and it's all rather sad & poignant.

Talking of spices - mine never get the chance to go out of date, but today's plan is to rationalise storage; 20-odd random containers of spices & grains don't half make a lot of clutter on my kitchen worktop. So I'm emptying a cupboard-full of less-used stuff, some of which may actually be rather elderly, and popping them in there instead. Then my kitchen may look somewhat less chaotic and a tad more like other people's. Not that that's a huge concern of mine, but it would be nice not to see people wince the first time they walk into it...

I've just had a new Combi Boiler and Rads installed, and it seems they've now come up with a solution to the freezing condensate pipe.

Instead of having it vent to the outside, it now drains to the waste water pipe, under the kitchen sink.

I had something similar, and fortunately have Mozy backup as a failsafe.

However, my plug-in Maxtor backup drive completely failed, and continues to do so, because Vista assigns a random drive letter to it every time I switch on the computer. Thus automatic backups cannot find the drive, nor can restore instructions. I have gone into disk management and set it to Z, but still sometimes it comes up as E, J, whatever.

    What a joke eh?

Maybe partly :shhh:, though I'm sure they'd hotly dispute that ;) We (our area of Thames Water's area iyswim) are the first to be getting the meters because all our water comes from boreholes. They will start to be installed during 2015 but apparently won't be switched on for 2 years, presumably to get us all used to learning to be as economical as possible with water usage in the meantime.

I expect a meter will save our household money compared to the water rates, but it won't be so good for bigger families.
