  • Hi all
I made nasturtium capers a couple of years ago and really liked them, dead easy to do, i think it was the river cottage recipe that I used.
I rather like nasturtiums growing everywhere, just as well I suppose as they seem to grow where they like with no help from me. I still find it a bit strange to eat the flowers, I know they are edible and tasty and look sooooo pretty in a salad but still feels a bit weird (I obviously just need to embrace my inner hippy a bit more :D).

  • Overnight, the 72 LED lamp ran out of battery power and went out.

Amazingly, the Aldi LED Lantern is still producing light.

Admittedly not much light, but light none the less.

I have the rechargeable batteries and today the lamps arrived. They are fantastic and so so useful. The first one pivots in all directions and can hang on a supplied hook. Extremely good for use in a power cut and the li-on battery is commonly used for tools, many people may already have the battery

The next one is like a powerful torch and the beam can swivel in one plane, it also has a supplied hook. I shopped around and got both a bit cheaper than here

Very long night last night, couldn`t lie down and couldn`t sleep sitting up, ended up with a very sore throat because of coughing. A travel neck pillow was very useful for when the head lolled. I cracked open a bottle of benylin so will need to replace that next week. Made me realise how very quickly you can go from being in control and energetic to a not coping stage. Shtf goodies are proving invaluable at the moment and no cooking from scratch for a few days

I just received a pack of cinnamon sticks from

and I split them up and vac packed them, like I do with lots of bulk foods eg nuts

I wish I really didn't care - but I do a bit. :o. Though I sm aiming for "good for my age" rather than "mutton dressed as lamb"

I make an effort - aside from being plump, wear glasses and the greying strands amongst the old dye growing out, I feel I too want to look good for my age.

I have scaled my make up way back, it now accentuates as opposed to alter. I can't wait for the old hair dye to just go so my greying sparkles.

I make and effort and be neat and tidy because it makes me feel good to be the best I can be - a mind set that follows me through my life - I have no desire to alter or be false but judge me you can because those who judge me on what I am, or what I am not, are not worthy of my time... as long as I know I am being the best I can be. ;) At the moment I can afford to think about my appearance. I have no real worries. It can be important.

Should SHTF, being 'the best I can be' will shift in priorities. At that point my appearance or my work ethic will fall by the way side because 'being the best I can be' will mean doing all I can to survive in the situation I am in. Foundation will not factor in my plans at all because using my provisions and effort in keeping my appearance would not be being the best I can be in the given situation - that would just make me an idiot. :rotfl:
  • I need to put my herb pots in the greenhouse for overwintering, DH has promised that he will build me a special herb raised bed in the spring.
The pineapple sage is now a triffid and has lots of lovely red flowers on it at the moment, I also have ordinary mint, apple mint, feverfew, chives, black peppermint, spearmint, oregano, fennel, rosemary, thyme, ordinary sage, marjoram and tarragon.
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

  • Theres nothing wrong in looking after what nature gave you and presenting a good clean and neat appearance to the world and taking care to make the best of your assets. What I really don't understand is ladies of my age who go for the black hair dye, too much make up, high heels and clothing appropriate to a 25 year old I know of one who wears footless leggings, very low skimpy tops and very tight waisted jackets a la Dolly Parton!. If it makes them happy who am I to criticise but I think it looks terrible and there's a vast void between that and someone who likes to wear make up to enhance their good points, use a gentle hair colour to maintain where you are in terms of age and dressing smartly and modernly (is that a word?) in nice clothes. It's a free world isn't it? and I guess I celebrate all the differences between different personalities but sometimes have a giggle about them too!

spices - recently rescued mine after a visiting parent decided to "help me out" whilst I was at work by separating all the beyond BB date in my spice and hot drinks cupboards for binning. I had just had a large approved foods order so whole bottles of new-to-me balsamic vinegar (at worst it'll get more vinegary as time passes) etc were included as well as teabags (teabags!!) which had 3 more years left on them - but they had read the wrong number as a BB date.

is there a point where one's parents cease to act on the "they know best" principle about their children's lives? I get mine will always think it, it's the random acting on it that I'm keen to get beyond. (LL aged 43 and three quarters, mother of 2, gainfully employed full-time, trusted to make business decisions, and manager of staff, independently living for 25+ years, completed higher education to post-doctoral level, home-owner, pension and life insurance provision on track). If not now - when?

    Ha ha.

I think with my parents it would be more likely I would be chucking out their items that are beyond the use by date.

About thirty years ago I cleared out my father's freezer, and had to show him the peas were black with mould before he would let me discard them. :)

Old Spices, eh?! With my family, it's me threatening to chuck out some of my sister's (a Hoarder Extraordinaire) - surely ground cinnamon with a BB date of 1960-something needs to go? BUT I am not actually bossy enough to do it, just to nag her to. She always refuses ....
