I didnt realise it was a guessing game frugalsod was halfway there too

It was the ends that flummoxed me.
It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.

I'm still wondering what carry-round flashlight type light (ie rather than a torch) anyone might recommend please? What is a good make at any rate that I can pick from?

I have a Petzl head torch, powered by AA's and using LED's. Perfect for wondering around in. Very handy if you are out at night as you can use it to light the ground immediately ahead of you and it leaves your hands free.

To me flashlight and torch are interchangeable terms. What do you mean by flashlight?
I lend to refer to hand portable scene lighting as lanterns - ie designed to provide light across an area but these aren't generally what I'd be looking at carrying regularly (there's a couple in the cars).
Head torches - I use one that also has red leds for night use, it does less damage to your night sight. But if you use any sort of head torch get into the habit of not looking at the people you're talking to. Generally I won't use a torch for walking at night, there's nearly alays enough ambient light to see stuff you need to - whereas torches create very dark shadows and you can't see the branch that's about to poke you in the eye or the root that will break your ankle.

Having read both his books (both Wilderness and Urban), cover to cover, I can tell you they are mines of information.

This guy spent 26 years with the Regiment, so what he doesn't know about survival, isn't worth knowing.

His SAS service is almost irrelevant, though its genuine and shows throughout his books and courses. A lot of what he says is common sense and some of it is blindingly obvious - once he's pointed it out to you.
The only books I rate above them are Seymour's Self Sufficiency and Mabey's Food For Free. Which are different aspects of prepping/survivalism

There's been an explosion of books in this field, some are a complete waste of time, some are brilliant and there'll be better books out there than the four referenced here, but these have been around long enough to garner fairly widespread respect, they are at least worth checking out of the library. What I'd watch out for are US based books, its a very different country and set of cultures.

Thanks both of you.Point taken,I'll check them out. :)
Sorry, another one butting in here....:o

When my DD was about 3, she had severe D&V. When we took her to the hospital they confirmed it was a virus and the A&E Nurse said fizzy coke, lemonade etc will stop the sickness and to let a glass of it go flat and that is the best thing to rehydrate you. We use this all the time here if our family have D&V and I have to say, it does work.

    Slinks off to lurkdom..

The oncology ward in my hospital keeps a permanent stock of cola in for the chemo patients,as it helps with n/v.

muffin man 7 good to 'see' you.I hope that your daughters are well on the mend.

PS The NSD thread misses you!
  • Looking for solar-powered indoor lamps,Ikea seem to have stopped making their Sunaan lamp. I found this one though.Looks good.

This thread moves really fast!I very easily got a few days behind.

Today I'm going to check on what toiletries I have in.I also thought of getting some small bottles of alcohol in -good for bartering.

I'll also get some more bottled water, haven't yet sourced water-purifying tabs or face masks.

    Lots to keep me occupied.

Lighten up, even though we deal with serious issues, we all have a tongue in cheek attitude to it
