that fire looks bad enough to me on our news I think its being played down as a minor incident don't look minor to me!

  • Thanks for the advice on re hydration, have made a note of it. Reminds me of the story of when my mother met my father in her early 20s & they went to live in Canada for a bit with his family. She got very sick with D&V & her new MIL gave her lemonade to drink... my mother thought she was trying to finish her off as they never saw eye to eye!:D It worked though & it's advice that's been passed down.
Need to get out in the garden & have a quick tidy up this morning before tonight's winds. We have a dubious looking fence panel that'll need tying to something as well.

Sorry, another one butting in here....:o

When my DD was about 3, she had severe D&V. When we took her to the hospital they confirmed it was a virus and the A&E Nurse said fizzy coke, lemonade etc will stop the sickness and to let a glass of it go flat and that is the best thing to rehydrate you. We use this all the time here if our family have D&V and I have to say, it does work.

    Slinks off to lurkdom..

For instance, when staying in a hotel, it's common sense to take note of the emergency escape routes, and the location of the fire extinguishers, but how many people don't bother to check these things?

this can be a problem for me - these instructions are usually fastened to the inside of the hotel room door, quite high up, and I find them very difficult to read these days due to my eyesight, even if i put my reading glasses on rather than my varifocals.
It would be okay if i could take them off the door!
  • HI LILLIBET how did the cider turn out last year??? Rather than just rely on candles if you could get to one IKEA make a solar lamp, shaped like a reading/desk lamp called SUNNAN that is around £18 to buy. We have 2 of them, have had them for a few years now and they just live on the windowsills turned off so the little solar panel is permanently charged up and ready to go. Works even in the darkest days of winter as the daylight alone is enough to charge them up. It's a big outlay in the first place but then you've ALWAYS got light for no extra costs, Lyn xxx.

We are lucky that we have had a mild autumn, but there could be problems if there is a cold winter on the way. I don't pay much attention to James Madden of Exactaweather - he always predicts snowmaggedon and it just happens he is linked to a cold weather tyre company. I'm not so sure about Piers Corbyn anymore after that spectacularly wrong August forecast but if he's wrong then at least he is impartially wrong, LOL. But I haven't seen anything from him about how this winter might turn out (though he is saying that Gonzalo will be worse than the Met Office are forecasting, joy!)
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

Lol, maryB, he was spot on for where I live but he does produce updates and finer detail for members. I have the forecast to the end of november. To me he is worth every penny, although expensive. I buy his very special offers from time to time and they are added onto my sub length, so I think I have subs for quite a while still. It is a question of knowing how to interpret his forecasts wrt his solar/lunar factors and not straightforward as read in certain newspapers

Just doing winter preps on the allotment this morning and picked two massive solid cabbages to make sauerkraut tomorrow. I love it when the sprinkling of salt and the bashing results in natural fermentation. Looking through my jars of brined green beans from 2012, they are still perfect for use.

I just need the thin bleach and I am done, my preps are complete, including having sorted all the paperwork and placing the carry file in a handy place for quickly grabbing

the hospital here also use flat coke for upset stomachs, and when I had food poisoning they gave me Red Bull to drink and it made me feel a lot better.

I think the weather will be worse than the met office are saying...this storm still holds a bit of a wallop potential. We have till Thursday then the storms are back. At the moment the sun is out but the sky is full of red dust from Africa. Its horrible and giving me something like hay fever and sore eyes.

Our solar panel system arrived today and is being fitted tomorrow.

It is worthwhile peeking at PCs site if the metO starts warning of something. PC is very generous in that he does put several hints into public forum. He placed the gonzalo hint a few days ago. Look down the r hand side
    http://www.weatheraction.com/

It is an R4 period when effects are more exagerated than metO would have us believe (and this is also true periods of drought/heat/cold/rain etc). It all depends on the solar/lunar R factors and he gives them well in advance, it is just a question then of interpretation as his R factors are always right and linked to solar flares etc. The world pressure maps do affect things though and sometimes the actual forecast might be a bit skewed but is actually taking place in another area

this can be a problem for me <snip>

I don't rely on the instructions in the room.

I walk the route, memorising it as I go, and counting the number of doors, between my room and the emergency exits.

Likewise, I memorise the locations of the Fire Extinguishers.

I also try to get a room, on the lowest possible floor.
