    I've been Money Tipped!
Hi Daz - hope you are feeling better soon!!!!

Think I'l store my lighter fluid and gas in a tin, at the bottom of the gardening box outside the back door. I have 2 spare quality street tins, should fit in well well enough. Might be room under random plant pots, seeds and stuff for a 3 or 4 bottles of water, and a few other preps too. Planning a small stash, that won't raise any interest if the neighbours see. So far, flammables, seeds, pots, bottled water, maybe salt (for ice) and vinegar (weedkiller and cleaner that will be safe around my guinea pigs. And anything else that could be used in garden / for guinea pigs (more multipurpose the better).

Fixed my washing machine today :j Each cycle lasted hours, and the water wasn't draining. So emptied the fluff trap (£1:05, plastic toothpick, clump long brown hair (mine) 2 curtain rings and blue paper). Flooded the kitchen - but washing machine working well :) So glad that worked - its one of the very few DIY jobs I know how to do. One of my prepping strategies - to improve on this!

Went foraging today too - with a wee book and hubby. First time ever. Didn't find much, but worth the walk.

As for vulnerability testing, there's always LOTS of scares about the possibility of a 'digital Pearl Harbor' and simulations have been done. But no one wants to spend the money (resources). Hence the need to CYA and document, document, document.

Just assume that most IT systems are flaky and full of vulnerabilities. There are a few that aren't... and those come as a pleasant surprise

To be fair, if you architecture it right, it doesn't really matter if the individual systems are flaky and vulnerable. With the correct instrumentation, anything that falls over will be cut off, and anything that does something out of the ordinary will be cut off.

The problem, is that to do it reasonably cheaply, you need people who have great attention to detail, know what they're doing, know the ins and outs of what they're using and who have time to do it with no ill-thought out management interference.

If you've got that, then you need to slap yourself because you're dreaming again... :rotfl:

    hello there.

I started stocking up on bits and pieces. Mostly batteries and torches and a few tinned goods plus bottled water.

How many of you out there have had to use your stocks recently? and how long do you prep for?

It is just that I worry about spending money on things that might never happen.

But I have the basics. Water is the main thing IMV, and after that some tinned corned beef and beans and spaghetti. Defrosted bread in the freezer if a power cut.

I have lots of edible stuff in the freezer that I would eat cold if I was starving, for example if the freezer has defrosted in a long power cut. Bread, butter, cream, milk and so on.

I don't want to over prep, but be prepared at the same time!

I don't have nor want a paraffin stove for cooking. Really what I want to achieve is survival for several days on non cooked stuff.

    Thanks.

They always did treat people as unsecured creditors (unless you have what's called a segregated account). That's why the FSCS was set up in the first place and your account is guaranteed by the FSCS, not the bank.

People were very trigger-happy if they suspected a bank in trouble and would withdraw their money at the drop of a hat. Compensation schemes were invented to try to cut down on the number of bank runs. They were not set up so people didn't lose money - you still can for deposits above €100,000 and for any size deposit given a "bail-in".

Segregated accounts have their own problems though - see Barclay's fines in regard to that, and also the re-hypothecation scandal. The FCA are up-tight about segregated accounts - as they should be - and the US regulators are unbelievably lax about them.
The bank deposit protection schemes as you said were to avoid the problems of a bank run. It worked for a long time, and did until Cyprus. Now the rules have changed and so should we in how we adapt.

With the new bail in rules I am trying to minimise the amount I have in the bank anyway. Though since I am using any cash surpluses to actually invest in home improvements that lower my cost of living and keep some cash at home for the several weeks that the banks are closed as they empty peoples accounts of any surplus. Cyprus showed that it will be many weeks before the banks are open again and until then cash will be king.

As for segregated accounts they are protected against solicitors fiddling, but I seriously doubt that they have the resources to guarantee segregated accounts raided during a bail in.

Even brokers segregated accounts have been raided by the banks in the case of MF Financial in the US. It could happen here as well. Also segregated accounts in Cyprus were also raided, so even if you had paid the money into a segregated account to buy a home and the bank seized much of it then you would have to find more money to finalise the purchase. So segregated accounts are not really any safer.

Ultimately I expect that the level of protection will be lowered when the next financial crisis strikes, but while most people will be impacted minimally it will be employers that are hit hardest. I suspect that mass redundancies will follow as companies are unable to pay wages. That is why I am cutting my living expenses to the point that if there were changes to my life and I had to live on unemployment benefits then the impact will be minimal. Cyprus showed us how things will be done.
It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.

the idiot with the foul mouth has `spammed` almost all the mse threads.I am sure mse are dealing with it, just keep bumping this thread

I have lots of water in butts and also a few filters from years ago but they drip water through, excellent for drinking but too slow for cooking. I think I will get a few 5l filled containers into my store. I could fill some empty containers but would always worry a bit about bugs, even though I would use wine container cleaner/steriliser. I`ll feel more comfortable with a manufacturer fill

Melanzana - sorry I was going to reply to you but the other thing threw me. I have recently had to give up work and couldn't get out of bed for 6 weeks after surgery, so my food preps were used for that. I'd made home made "ready meals" for the freezer and made sure we were stocked up in the cupboards for at least a month. It made life easier for hubs and I knew I'd get something nourishing to eat :rotfl:All our other things we use for camping etc. anyway but just top up after use rather than wait for the next holiday. I've been working on getting extra water in. We do have a water butt that could be used to flush loos.
