    Good morning.
This is my first post (and possibly last!) although I have been reading this thread and others for years. Anyway, due to having some surgery, I have had to give up work and am having a compulsory sit down in a wheelchair for a while.
So my own SHTF time has arrived but I don't have to get too stressy. Why not? I hear you cry in amazement!
Simply because I have taken on board all your good advice (plus that from others such as Prep. for winter) and filtered out what suits me and mine to prepare for this time.
I'm sure there are many others like me who are a bit too shy to post so, on behalf of us all, THANK YOU ALL!!! :D.
I would rather be without the wheels I have just acquired....much prefer my old bike, but they do move well on my posh floorboards:rotfl:
Not dim ;) .....just living in soft focus :p

Not that you've had to give up your employment and have health problems, but that you've found preptastic help on these threads which has made life easier for you at a difficult time.

Thank you so much for your thank-yous and please post with us all again, we don't bite. Well, I don't, can't speak for that Mardywotsit, I'm sure she could be dangerous if cornered, or you got between her and her sweeties.

I'm a flooring rebel too; have never seen the point of wall-to-wall carpet, except to say that you can afford to buy it and have the time to look after it! Harbours germs and dirt, full of nasty chemicals to prevent fire & stains, temptation for elderly feline friends to be mistaken as to what's underfoot... not a useful addition to my life, I've always felt. We have hard floors with the occasional rug downstairs, we do have carpet on the stairs in case of falls, and cork tiles upstairs, which are warm underfoot & easy to clean.

Mind you, we live in just about the warmest & most sheltered part of the country, so insulation doesn't play a huge part in our furnishing decisions.

I'm totally conflicted about cars. Having done the maths, I know that basically all my day-to-day earnings go to keep my car on the road, as well as supporting the odd student/struggler and an occasional break in the sun. I couldn't run my stalls without the car, but then, I wouldn't need to. But I do enjoy what I do, although I never have enough time because if it. I'm not a "natural" driver and hate seeing roadkilled birds & animals, which of course fairly litter our rural roads in summer. We could cope perfectly well most of the time without me driving, here; we have two small supermarkets, a large & excellent market, doctors, pharmacists, butcher, greengrocer, a small fabric & wool shop, restaurants & take-aways, even a small theatre/cinema, all within easy walking distance. BUT - the elderlies. I can't get to them in an emergency in under 2½ hours by public transport, although they're only 26 miles away... and the taxi fare would pay for fuel & insurance for a month! And I am by quite some way the closest of the combined (able-bodied) offspring, & the most able to drop everything & get there fast.

I would actually like very much to go carless, but can't, yet...

:) When I ran my little old cars, I was doing buying and selling, but because I have kept my numbers (tracked my finances) since the late 1990s, I knew that my earnings were paying for the car which let me make the earnings, and that I wasn't getting ahead, just treading water.

Where I was moving to wouldn't enable me to do the same stuff, I wouldn't have the storage, so I shed the car and the lifestyle. But these are very personal choices and if you get value emotionally from what you do, and the car enables that work, you have to offset the personal satisfaction gained against the ecomomics.

I have tiled floors in my flat, the council standard Marley tiles, with 3 rugs; a long runner in the hall to knock off dust from the streets and two hand-hooked rugs in the living room to provide a bit of warmth underfoot. I love not having to buy, maintain and eventually clean, dispose of and replace carpets.

And, if I ever move, dealing with my floorcoverings will involve about 1 minute of effort in rolling the rugs and tying them up with string. Plus, I do consider them insanitary; they're reckoned to hold 90% more dust than hard-floored areas. Ick.

  • Hi all,
No carpets in our house, sometimes I think we may have gone beyond the shabby chic to just shabby, but it' my shabby:D.
I was talking with my mum the other week about the 1970's ( was born in 68) my little bruv and I were pretty unaware of financial stuff, mum and dad both worked like troopers to make ends meet without it impacting on us. Saying that, we didn't have a phone or car until we were bigger, but we did have lots of adventures, picnics, visits to the library etc so I thought i was in heaven.

On a peptastic note I purchased a pair of army "softies" on fleabay the other day and I am in love they are so comfy, feels like im walking about in a sleeping bag:rotfl:, I think they will be a wonderful addition in the winter months.
Only down side is they only come in a delightful army green or cream, they are reversible so when you are out in the desert you can wear them cream side out:D.

    According to Wikepedia:
Dennis is the archetypal badly behaved schoolboy. The main recurring storyline throughout the years features his campaign of terror against a gang of 'softies' (effeminate, well-behaved boys), particularly Walter. Walter finds himself in unfavourable circumstances on many occasions, although he sometimes gets the last laugh.

    LOL

They look and sound lovely but are definitely not moi dahling.. and the RV would give himself a hernia laughing.
I am a carpet lover... I don't care how many germs and how much dust it's got in it, I like to sit onnit, lie onnit and walk onnit :) My ideal house would be a huge room, fitted with wall to wall 6" deep carpet, one big comfy armchair, a wall full of books and a laptop. O bliss!
