That's very, very sound advice and it usually solves a good few problems. Problem 'processing time' I call it, hob nobs compulsary although digestives will do at a pinch.0 -

Vanoonoo Thanks for adding me to the ranks!
I can highly recommend the Sainsbury's basics white choccie, tastes as good, or to my pallet, better, than a certain other white choc brand. And only 30p for 100g
ETA: the Sainsbury's basics tinned potatoes have changed price. From 19p to 18p, for some strange reason. What's going on there then?0 -
Hi to all on the forum ,
I normally read a few pages a day and try to catch up with anything new.
Through this thread i have been adding to my tinned goods, looking at first aid for the home, buying some wind up torches, wind up and solar lantarns and radios, got a bag for bug out and slowly starting to add a few bits each week to the bag.
Also have a small emergency type bag in the car incase weather is bad and we are stuck in the car for a few hours.
I have also thought about should normal comunications be affected, i contacted my local amature radio club for some basic information on amature radio etc, and my first club meeting is this week, so looking forward to going along to that to get some more information which might come in useful if needed.
Keep up the good work preppers, this has been a very useful board for me :T0 -
GQ hope you Uncle got to hospital ok today.
I watched the Kevin McCloud programme (was it Fuddle that mentioned it a few pages back) and loved it, its all about the way we all think on the thread -dont buy it make it - I laughed a lot at their antics too but loved the contented look on Kevins face everytime he succeeded.
jeannie the problem with Twinks hobknobs is you can never make enough especially when someone realises that they taste good eaten straight out of the freezer. They are so addictive
Hope everyone is fine on this cold but sunny day - wish me luck Im off to push OH round B*Q if Im not back in a couple of hours Ive been arrested for mowing down idiots who don't get out of the way.Clearing the junk to travel light
Saving every single penny.
I will get my caravan0 -

GQ regarding the root cellaring in the states it seems to work on a principle like our ice houses etc used to over here. They are using dug down into the soil so they keep an even cool temperature and are shelved out it seems rather than clamped like over here.I am sure Backwoodshome or similar site had an article will try and find a link..
GQ - check out Sepp Holzer http://www.richsoil.com/sepp-holzer/sepp-holzer-permaculture.jsp
Thats the most comprehensive link I found in a quick search - root cellars are near the bottom.
He makes his root cellars large enough to use as cattle shelters. The root cellars have doors on them basically into which a human can still walk. But I have seen smaller ones of the same design in some piccies.
I have also seen people bury old lockers in the ground, door upwards, Then pile brash over the top and earth up. mark with stakes to stop people walking on top and make it easy to find in snow.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
Nuatha many thanks for posting about the gobags especially as your OH is so poorly I send my best wishes for a speedy recovery its awful when they're in there as you really can't settle to get anything done at home can you? If theres anything we can do please ask X
2T I had been following that story too especially as the patient was transferred down here..Very sad to hear he passed away today. Ticks in this country can carry Lymes disease but I *think* thats about it will google just in case and amend if necessary.Have you seen the doc yourself yet? Hope you and OH are feeling better soon X
ETA blimey wish I'd never looked now lol regarding ticks http://www.bada-uk.org/homesection/about/diseases/indexdiseases.php
*this is not a rudey link it just looks a bit dodgy on the abbreviation!*
I've just been batching up my rechargeable batteries I got some new ones recently which knock spots off any I've tried before..they are supposed to hold a charge for 2 years too
called eneloop if anyones interested.
The uniross are ok but I've a feeling I'll be replacing them all eventually with these ones.
I also purchased a few Rolsner led torches for stashing around the house which I've been pleasantly surprised by considering just how cheap they were on amazon

Don't talk to me about ticks and lymes disease. We once stayed in a house out in the woods in the Scottish highlands. A beautiful place and we had a great time, but because he forgot to stick on insect repellant the first day OH came home with a couple of ticks yuck.
He had been in the shower and was on the bed in just his undies when I noticed what I thought was a bit of dirt stuck to his thigh and went to brush it off. I then realised it had bits stuck in him and legs argggggggghhhhh. Checked him and the kids over (and me as well) none on us luckily but 2 on him. We got them off-squashed them and thought all would be ok.
The week after we got home he started feeling "odd" and fluey and then got a red raised rash around the bit on his leg. So gp sent him to A and E. Next thing he was rushed into isolation and drs from the tropical disease dept kept coming and checking him. They said he showed signs of lymes in his blood.
He ended up having these really strong tablets to get rid of it-the pills said on the back they were also to treat malaria! He wasn't right for months and months (although only took a week off work) and got tired really easily for ages.
Shame for the poor man who recently passed away, horrid little creatures. Just like that programme "monsters inside me", all those parasites and worms just waiting to get into you and run wild makes me shudder yack.
