I wonder what the 1 hour lights off did to the grid demand.

ETA: It does seem to have had an effect.

Just had a look at the Daily Demand Graph, and from 2200hrs, there was a steep fall in demand.
  • Amazing, and still TPTB haven't suggested voluntarily using less electricity have they? Why don't people get to that thought on thier own? I would have thought that using less was only common sense anyway and not too hard to accomplish and would most certainly help keep costs down to free up more cashflow for other things, even saving???

    Latest update from Reality Weather

TODAY'S CHART - chance of some very heavy & thundery downpours in Irish midlands and northeast. Don't be surprised to see one pop up just about any where in Ireland or western / central Britain. Plenty more unsettled weather on the way for the week with more rain, showers and thunderstorms affecting many ares. Some good drier periods too. Extra- tropical trouble could be brewing for the weekend as Hurricane Bertha's remnants will be hightailing it across the Atlantic towards the UK & Ireland after being picked up by the Jet Stream;- could bring quite a lot of rain and potentially, some very strong winds. We will be watching it and will update on it soon.

Bob, Lyn and BB, thank you for your helpful kelly kettle tips - I wasn't sure if it should smoke or not. It works very well, most impressed, glad I splashed out now! :)

I had my candle lit for an hour last night, sadly none of my immediate neighbours did, but I know lots of my friends around town had theirs lit. Interesting to see how much leccy use dropped during the hour - TPTB should encourage people to have a "dark hour" regularly to shore up the grid for winter :D Lyn, sadly I think we on here are the few with common sense, most people don't give a fig for the future :(

2T, thanks for the heads up about the weather, will check on my apples before then - already lost the only 2 cooking apples to some gusty wind this week - would like the dessert apples to stay on the tree a bit longer.

I de-leafed some of my spuds that were showing signs of blight - one bed only, thankfully - but others are showing signs now, so today's main job is removing every single leaf with marks on just to be sure.

    A xo

  • I try to keep my electricity (and indeed gas) usage as low as possible.

I currently use only around £180 worth of electricity (and £192 worth of gas) per year.

    Same here.

The only other properties in my street, which didn't have several lights burning, were those where the occupants were out, leaving the property in total darkness.
  • I couldn't see anyone else with a candle in the part of the street that I can see either, I'm glad we all did it though, as a sign of respect it was fitting wasn't it?

I'll fess up to say I didn't pay much attention to any of it. It felt wrong to be commemorating the start of a conflict (as opposed to the end) and imo it opened the door to misplaced patriotism and jingoism. Plus the timing was unfortunate and just served to highlight the hypocritical attitude of some of our leaders given their stance on the Palestine situation, arms sales and the like.
