    Evening folks.

I was musing the other day about how difficult life and business might be if the UK were to introduce capital controls similar to Cyprus.

For instance they are not allowed to take more than 300 Euro to the Turkish area. I guess this would be analogous to us taking pound notes to Southern Ireland or possibly an independent Scotland.

Now, I have about three months grocery cash stashed, but what if the restrictions went on longer than that?

    Should I stash more?

:D Aim for 12 months, jk0. If nothing else, having your dosh outside the bank contributes to their lack of profits and may reduce the happiness of some [STRIKE]wa[/STRIKE] oops! bankers.

At about this time of year I start thinking about what preps I need to make for the colder weather. I'm about to order more logs and will make sure we have some paraffin for the lamp. But usually I would stock up the freezer come October so that if the weather is bad for a few days I don't have to worry about running out of bread, milk etc.

This year, I'm not sure what to do - if we have power cuts because of geopolitical tensions combined with a total lack of strategic thinking by those responsible for the last 20 years, then a full freezer is not necessarily going to help. But if there is a risk that supply chains will be disrupted because of restrictions on movement to prevent the spread of Ebola (or pandemic flu come to that) then a stocked freezer could be just the ticket.

Having thought about it, I am going to try and fill a few more Kilner jars since I have invested in an American canner. Seems to cover both bases in terms of gaining a bit of short term flexibilty
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

:) C'mon Bob, I'm childless too and even I know teens watch what they want, regardless of the determination of their dutiful parents.

Very true GreyQueen. That's made me think of when I was young about 6/7 I think. I was reading at an advanced level, and found a horror book in my dads van. I still remember reading the first chapter, blood, gore and aliens, before having it snatched out of my hands. Annoyingly dad can't remember what the book was, so I don't know if the rest is any good.

  • Does anyone know how long the ebola virus remains 'live' after it leaves the body of an infected person? Without wishing to scaremonger, I find it somewhat alarming to read/hear people saying that good hygiene/washing one's hands easily prevents infection spreading. The design of many public loos is so poor that you often have to touch a door handle to exit AFTER washing your hands - so if one person before you hasn't bothered to wash their hands you might as well not have bothered washing yours either. I've even seen people walk out without washing their hands after using hospital loos, where you would think people would be a bit more hygiene-aware! The best loo design is that used in US airports, where there's no actual door on the way in/out.

Capital controls are not the problem. Older forumites might remember times when you could not take more than £50 abroad. Capital controls are essential if you are to avoid tax dodging. Also China the fast growing economy still has capital controls.

The problem that Cyprus has suffered is that its banks were heavily invested in Greek bonds, primarily because the Cyprus government did not issue enough bonds of its own. So when the Greek debts were written down it basically turned the banks overnight insolvent.

The situation is different here. The banks are in reality insolvent. The issue is not their holdings of government bonds but that of its secured assets, particularly property. These are recorded at values that are not realistic, and dependent on a new property bubble to rescue them from insolvency.

As for having a cash stash you might need several years spending hidden somewhere. Iceland still has capital controls in place, as does Cyprus. Though you are more at risk of losing what money that you have at the bank than anything else, when the bank collapses and they simply seize your deposits to make ends meet. That is a bail in.

Just make sure that your insurance covers it and what the cash rating is of the safe.
