Preparedness for when

I see on the Sky news that the EU etc have decided that they are imposing sanctions on Russia. Last time they threatened that Russia threatened to cut off oil and gas supplies to Europe. I don't know about the UK but Greece gets about 75 percent of its oil and gas from Russia. It could be a long cold winter with no running around in cars and no heating for the house if the Russians cut off the supply like they have threatened, in retaliation.
Also, this Ebola outbreak. Before the news E. Holmes said that a man dying of Ebola passed through several international airports and both my husband and I heard him mention Birmingham. Did anyone else hear this........as the news item did not mention the UK or airports or him passing through......... strange.
Off to fill my calor gas bottles so we have enough gas for a year for cooking and the emergency gas heater. Prepping at it's best. Going to stock up on candles and oil lamp oil on the way home as we are on a dangerous weather alert with a tornado watch (yes, this is Greece lol). It was wall to wall sunshine when I got up but it is now clouding over rapidly . Later peeps, have a lovely prepping day!“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. When in a state of security he does not forget the possibility of ruin.” Confucius (551 BC - 479 BC):A0 -
I am still clearing the freezer so I can replace the contents with newer stocks once I have defrosted it.
Otherwise a quiet day is to be expected. I am still making use of the solar kettle and expect to get enough hot water out of it today to meet my drinking needs. It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0 -
Pretty windy here today....thats not unusual though for here but haven't heard it like this for a few weeks now.
Going to look up oil lamps to get for my prepping, have got someone I can get some logs from for free, no use this year, but will be good by next year I would imagine.Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.0 -
I am now getting a bit concerned about the Ebora SP?? bug out in Africa, surely now there should be a shut down in those African countries to potentially stop the spread...
the worst thing is there is no cure... does anyone know more about it??Work to live= not live to work0 -
I talked to my GP daughter about the Ebola virus last weekend. She says it's such a problem out there in Africa because the infection is from bodily fluids and they have the practice of taking home a body and having respect visits from family, friends, villagers and that's how the virus gets a real foothold. There is no cure, no vaccine and a very few people have natural immunity. However, if there is a real emerging danger the procedures are already in place for containment and screening at all entry points into this country and they will be applied vigorously, her words!!! So don't worry too much. It's a vicious and deadly disease but I think I trust the Gubbyment in this one!!!0

Sorry to jump in but know one of you knowledgeable people will be able to answer this one......
I was having a discussion with my Dad last week about supplies of gas from Russia and he said we don't get very much from them at all, is this right as I thought we got quite a bit from them?
Also, one day last week, we had 5 channok (?) helicopters and a military helicopter come over our house, upon speaking to someone in the armed forces they said we are sending troops and equipment to Poland 'for a training exercise'. Anyone else heard anything about this?0 -
Thanks GQ, I hoped you'd see my post, as I knew your reply would be interesting and informative
I do feel very sorry for the councils; in the early 1980s I did a "New Opportunities for Women" course, which included a lot of what I believe is called consciousness-raising, and one exercise they gave us was to say "Right, you're running the country, here is your budget for the financial year and these are the things it has to be spent on, allocate it in the best way possible!"
It was astonishingly difficult. If we wanted to allocate more spending to something vital, something else equally vital simply couldn't be afforded.
So it's not really the council I'm angry with, but the grubbymentBut our local council is almost entirely Conservative (with the exception of a couple of UKIP people, both of whom replaced Lib Dems at the most recent election) so we tend to feel they will be happy to toe the grubbyment line.
And although it seems like a good idea to have this survey - both because it gives local people a chance to have their say, and because it shows us how difficult the decisions are - too many folk aren't in a position to fill the thing in.
I'm thinking, for example, of two people with learning difficulties we see at the local shops every day. I think they are brother and sister. The man does all the actual shopping; I've only ever heard the woman speak once, and that was just one word. She usually shuffles along behind him, glaring at the ground. Can't imagine them, for instance, coping with an online survey. My daughter, a carer for her disabled husband, has been in angry tears over it all and has complained to the council that the results won't be a fair representation. She awaits their anodyne reply with interest.
Of course things will get worse and worse as local funding is cut and cut again - and yet the papers (well some of them) write as if "austerity" is now over and done with
Rant over. For now.0 -

I believe we get some gas from Russia, but only a small amount. I think Germany gets a lot more though. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be along shortly
And yes, there is going to be a big military exercise in Poland in September, I think? It's been in the papers and I saw it on the BBC News website.0 -

Thank you Ivyleaf, must have missed that bit of info! :eek:0 -
2T a man was tested in a Birmingham hospital after becoming feverish on a flight from Nigeria via Paris but he was given the all clear.
Re gas from Russia, my concern is that although we don't get much gas directly from Russia, I read that a lot of the gas we do get from Norway is on 'interruptible contracts' because that is cheaper, so no firm guarantee of supply. If Germany needs to replace supplies will they outbid us?
Vivid dreams last night about having to evacuate DD from university. We passed a shop window with one of those cheap plastic water carriers - the sort they sell in pound shops in the camping section - and I remember saying I wished we had bought one of those. It's getting to me:rotfl:It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0
