Kittie I am not assuming the type of weather, I am working on the amateur/underground weather sites across Europe checking translations and passing on info between group. Piers is not the only forecaster saying this but he only passes full information on to those who subscribe. I don't blame him for that, it is his living. But the other sites do not charge and I will be posting their warnings as they become available. Whether people take action or not is up to them. You can't be prepared for everything but you can do things to try to limit damage and inconvenience.“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. When in a state of security he does not forget the possibility of ruin.” Confucius (551 BC - 479 BC):A0

While the weather is still good, it might be a great time to think about possible scenarios and see if you could prepare for them in advance,if at all. We have done some repairs to the house but it still needs some water proofing, particularly on the marble, to make it rain proof this winter.
We have been following the horrendous storms in Europe over the last couple of weeks, particularly the Italian ones as that is where most of our bad winter weather comes from. We have both come to the conclusion that it would not take a lot to cancel all flights and ferries this coming autumn/winter.
We have stocks of food in the house but things would go downhill pretty quickly with no food and fuel and other goods able to move in and out of the island. I am going to increase the amount of tinned meat and fish in my stocks and maybe some fruit and veggies. There are huge amounts of fruit and veg available locally but if the ground gets water logged (it does!) then we won't have access to any.
We are ordering our fire wood to be delivered as soon as my OH has build a lean to so that it stays dry. We are also going to fill the diesel tank which is currently half full. We use calor gas for the hob and have two full bottles of gas which can last us over a year.
I need to stock up on candles and oil for the storm lamps as soon as possible ready for the winter months. The local church is having a jumble sale and selling off winter clothes in the next few weeks (even though its currently 36 in the shade LOL) the wise ones will stock up ready for the winter. We still have our thermals as we packed them away when we went to Thailand. We are pretty well stocked with medicines, dried food and water supplies in containers.
Any other suggestions? We keep the car and bike topped up with fuel at all times. We have good maps of the area we live in and we are half way up the mountain. Should it start flooding badly we could go up the mountain with a GAG bag and stuff in the car....or walk up. The biggest problem is if the storms strike when we are not at home...they seem to pop up out of nowhere these days, with very little warning!“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. When in a state of security he does not forget the possibility of ruin.” Confucius (551 BC - 479 BC):A0 -
I have no idea what kind of disastrous weather we might be expecting mid-August, because this the UK; we're quite used to blazing sunshine one minute, torrential rain & high winds the next. The thing which would catch most of us, including the farmers, out down here, would be frost in August... The really unusual thing is a run of good weather, which we're currently experiencing. Not that I'm not enjoying it hugely!
That said, I'm very grateful for the warnings, however vague, and shall be checking my stores & potential vulnerabilities over the next couple of weeks, as well as trying to see that DS1 and the elderlies have some emergency stocks & plans in place. And I'm very much aware that the intensity of whatever weather we are experiencing has increased greatly in the last few years, as well as the speed with which it's hitting us.Angie - GC Aug25: £374.16/£550 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)0 -
Quite a few of the forecasters have a danger period marked out from 30th July to around 5th August. Since the start of that is tomorrow we won't have long to wait and see. Italy has a warning out for very dangerous storms again from late tonight, and we often get their weather soon after, so I am keeping an eye on the storm maps. I have seen funnel clouds here several times in the last week and there have been amazing water spouts, many of them. I have been trying to figure out how to put some photos on without the photo having a http address. It is easier to post a you tube link so will do that so you can enjoy the water spouts etc in Corfu this week.

Actually, I could quite enjoy a snowy cold day where can get my thermals and boots out and sit in front of a nice log fire with no electric on! I have had enough of the hot sunshine...“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. Just wondering if you can tell me (however vaguely) if this strange weather will affect Ireland (particularly the North East)?0 -

I think I need to have a good look at my stocks. I've been running the freezer down, but am questioning this. Although I guess tins are best to stock up on for an emergency. Need more water as well.
The news has made me panic a bit. Although I'm avoiding it as it makes me so sad.
I am running the fridge and freezer down to defrost and clean. I am expecting to have to refill it again but maybe with things like vegetables. It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0 -

Half way up a mountain? That would have to be Noah's flood wouldn't it?
A GAG bag?
I just realised you meant 'Grab & go.' Before that I was thinking you wanted something to be sick into, or maybe a joke bag that won't hold anything.0
