One thing I was thinking of is this -
If the shops were shut NOW - no cheating! - would you be able, honestly, to provide 3 meals a day until for example Monday? Would you have every single thing you usually have? Or would you run out of bread/milk/salt/potatoes? Just be honest, sit and think it out
Yes, easily till Monday and beyond. But I would 'run out' of some things, such as fresh milk. However, I have long life and dried, and could substitute for other things too. For example, if the potatoes ran out, there is plenty of rice, pasta and couscous.0 -
Just been musing (I enjoy a good muse), whether it would be possible to construct an EMP proof garage, in which to store a vehicle (or vehicles), world band radio, a few pairs of Walkie Talkies, etc. ?0

I'd have to make my own bread from Saturday.
Fresh milk we'd be okay until Tuesday/Wednesday, but have UHT and powered as well as coffeemate type stuff and soya.
Cheese, couple of kilos on hand. Eggs there's only a dozen and a half.
If I don't have the freezers, then meals would get a bit samey in around 8 weeks, but I'd hopefully have some veg from the garden by then.
Once I finish in the office this evening, I don't intend crossing my front door till Tuesday next week, so won't need shops (and haven't particularly shopped in advance for this)0 -

The problem would be with the door if you want to regularly use the vehicle, and not lay it up permanently.
The whole garage would need to be lined with sheet metal/ mesh, electrically connected at every wall/floor/ceiling angle. Then the (metal) door would need to be electrically connected to the metal/mesh all along its edges.0 -

Easily.
My store of tinned soup alone, would see me through a couple of weeks.Would you have every single thing you usually have? Or would you run out of bread/milk/salt/potatoes?
I'd soon run out of fresh milk and margarine (and very soon, if the fridge wasn't running), but potatoes wouldn't be a problem, as I have plenty of tins of them.
The only things I'd struggle with, would be fresh stuff, like milk, cheese, bread, etc., but I always keep in a few tins of powdered milk (and 6x1 Litre cartons of UHT), so brewing up wouldn't be be problem.0 -

I have a couple of cupboards filled with the basics for curry, so have about 6 months of curry in store, no need to worry about anything else really. It would get very boring very quickly but I think that if it were necessary I would cope.
I was planning on getting some T's dried milk on my next online mega shop, as an experiment. I will also be looking at more air tight food drums for rice and lentils etc. If the dried milk works out I could easily cope for several months if well stocked up without even venturing out of the door. Very handy if avoiding a pandemic. Though eggs and cheese would be the next problem. It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0 -
I ed survive for a few weeks on the stores I have , no problem with eggs as freeze them, plus use powered egg replacement. Cheese, I have a few waxed ones brought ys after Christmas . The thing I would run out of is cigarettes  or coffee which would not be safe for the general population.. Need to get a store of this in..

Ps. How do I know if my spuds are ready to dig up? I've experimented with growing some in sacks and tall tubs.
Thanks xtoday's mood is brought to you by coffee, lack of sleep and idiots.

Can you not get canned cheese any more?0
-
They used to sell canned cheese in the Indian section of the World Foods Aisle in Mr. T. but I haven't seen it for ages, best replacement would be those cheese triangles in foil that can be stored at room temperature and not in the fridge. Not quite the same thing I know but speaking as a cheeseaholic any old fix would do as long as it was cheesy!!!0
