Just been musing (I enjoy a good muse), whether it would be possible to construct an EMP proof garage, in which to store a vehicle (or vehicles), world band radio, a few pairs of Walkie Talkies, etc. ?

    Yes.
My preferred starting point would be a 20 or 40 foot shipping container - you'd only have the doors to rework to ensure no gaps and complete conductivity. With something that large I'd worry about the accidental antenna possibility so would earth spike all four corners.
Starting from a conventional garage, build a box inside the garage with wire mesh (I'd probably start with the sort of stuff that's used to re-enforce concrete and line it with a fine copper mesh) ensure all the edges are fully lined (no large gaps) and again with that much metal involved I'd run earth spikes from the corners.
You could also just buy an old vehicle.

I would like to learn to make bread without the use of bread maker or oven - can you do it on a gas ring (down boy, bedsit bob)

So note to self is to make sure we don't get so low on eggs and maybe have a bit more milk provision.

The obvious starting point would be flat breads, and an old cast iron frying pan. (Incidentally that's wraps, muffins and crumpets taken care of)
You can use a heavy lidded casserole (effectively a dutch oven).

I'm considering building an outdoor wood fired pizza oven back end of this year. Which would also work for baking bread (and other things). Still in the musing/planning stages at the mo, along with a cold smoker.

Good one Mar (sorry to hear you're feeling carp tho hope you are feeling brighter soon XX)

VJ's Mum aussie damper bread is cooked over an open fire and lots of different breads and cakes can be baked without a conventional oven.

When they did rich and poor sides on BigBrother years ago they made bread on their Barbie.

I use my cobb which will bake most things like a normal oven but plan to experiment with the Barbie too this year.
You just need a reasonably sturdy tin or casserole dish on top of a BBQ you'd need a pot like a dutch oven,I can use a normal bread tin on my cobb as it doesn't heat in the same way.I bet you could do a small loaf in a tin even on a rocket stove..

As for supplies yup we'd be fine but would miss fresh milk after a few days, like others we have longlife, powdered, coffemate etc but its not the same is it..I need a cow :) We get through around 40 pints a week here!!!!

Bob, am most covetous of that torch, where did you get it? Please tell me not Home Bargains/ B & M as they don't have them here.......I was in a 99p Store this afternoon and meant to buy one of those little LED lanterns which run on 4 x AA batteries, which I think you product-tested for us and found worthy. If memory serves, and increasingly, it doesn't. ;)

I just ordered one from ebay GQ:

You unzip pigeons by pulling their wings and head off and poking your thumbs (knuckle-to-knucke) down the neck hole and deftly turning the bird inside out, thus exposing the breast meat ... without all that messy business with plucking.

I know you can treat ducks, the same way I treat rabbits, ie. the belly pinch and nick method.

No! I'd run out of ciggies and jellabies in a few days and become a rabid zombie in no time flat.

Must see to that supply deficit in short order. Loads of food and bread and stuff but completely missed the essentials. facepalm!

    Thanks for the brain shock.

Bluebag that's why I switched to the leccy cigs as well as being cheaper I keep a stockpile of tips in and I can recharge the battery on my weza or in the car :)

I have sweeties, more sweeties and stuff to make sweeties lol I also have the book When there is no dentist....

Yeah, I know, compared to 99p. :) However, it would cost me nearly £4 for a bus into Reading to try to find a pound shop.

I used one of my AA car essentials beacons yesterday. Not for a car breakdown I hasten to add. It was to see some immersion heater wiring in a tenant's airing cupboard that had failed. Thank goodness I had it.
  • There's a 99p Store at Broad Street Mall Shopping Centre, Reading.

You made me laugh about your son who is intolerant to cows: What does he do, shout at them for mooing too loudly? :)
