which I might experiment on at some point
I can't see any reason why that wouldn't work well.
Do let us know how the experiments go.0 -
.....The obvious starting point would be flat breads, and an old cast iron frying pan. (Incidentally that's wraps, muffins and crumpets taken care of)
You can use a heavy lidded casserole (effectively a dutch oven).
I'm considering building an outdoor wood fired pizza oven back end of this year. Which would also work for baking bread (and other things). Still in the musing/planning stages at the mo, along with a cold smoker.
whic would be applicable to any heavy based cast iron pan I guess. Would be a useful addition to the stores although a bit heavy for the BOB.
Supplies until Monday, no problem, we wouldn't even have to change our plans although to carry on much beyond that milk, butter and cheese would be a problem. Would love to have some chickens for our own egg supply, might have to wait until we have more space at home though!0 -
i take you mean wood pigeons .... for turning inside out etc, sure i read your every day pigeons ...carry disease and general nastiness....and would be a risk eating them? will look out for the whitener as i have a jar of expired march 14 coffee ....i have hardly touched. one more shift ..then my one in 3 weekends off....happy prepping0

Don't touch city pigeons daz they're riddled with disease and can carry TB.
VJsmum, am wondering if you could copy the Victorians and heat a dutch oven really hot then turn the gas off and put your bread in to cook then?
Also if anybody is really really old and remembers Bony the aboriginal detective.. Arthur Upfield who wrote the books went to Australia before WW1 and talks about life on the sheep stations as a boundary rider. They lived in a tin hut and only saw the overseer once a week when he rode out with supplies. He tells you that they made damper over a small fire and tinned jam on it for breakfast. Then shot a sheep every few days and hung it up in a meat safe away from flies, ate it as chops or in stew with potatoes.0 -
You made me laugh about your son who is intolerant to cows: What does he do, shout at them for mooing too loudly?
:rotfl:
I did think that might get picked up on - though there is an apostrophe :p
I have a wonderful le cruset casserole - huge and cast iron though I don't want to wreck it by plunging it in the fire. I shall have to source something else, I think.I wanna be in the room where it happens0 -
Oh and two and a half hours for me,GQ, and still another hour for this week to do.I wanna be in the room where it happens0

Someone I know has a broken arm atm. She finds at least one upside to the nuisance - no ironing for the next several weeks.
I expect the world will still turn.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

VJsmum, I use my Le Creuset casseroles (& frying pans) outside on our little pot-belly BBQ stove with no ill-effects. They usually look a bit sooty on the outside when brought back in, but scrub up fine afterwards. I probably wouldn't use them if I were cooking anything exceptionally sugary or starchy, e.g. rice pudding, though, as if they burnt that'd stick horribly & take days of soaking & scrubbing to get off. But for run-of-the-mill stuff like casseroles or a loaf of low-yeast bread, they're almost as good as the huge Lodge Dutch Oven I rescued from the Tip a few years back.
Anyone else spotted this story this morning? Interesting...Angie - GC Jul 25: £225.85/£500 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)0 -
