Most Cold Callers (TVL included) get the dumb silence approach from me.
They soon get bored of listening to their own voice, and slink away.
If it's someone trying to persuade me to transfer to a different energy supplier, I'll sometimes threaten to report them, for breaching Section 7.4.3(b) of the Code of practice for the face to face marketing of energy supply.
That usually shifts them PDQ.0 -
Obviously I should be feeling offended. I don't get cold calls, and TVL just send me a polite letter every couple of years asking me to confirm that I haven't bought a TV or started watching live TV again. Then again, after nearly 15 years they've probably worked it out...0

Why should you be expected to confirm, that you aren't breaking the law?
Do the NRA write to you, asking you to confirm you aren't fishing without a Rod Licence?
Do the CAA write to you, asking you to confirm you aren't flying without Pilots Licence?
Do the police write to you, asking you to confirm you aren't owning guns without a FAC/SGC?Then again, after nearly 15 years they've probably worked it out...
Over the last four and a bit years, I've had 54 letters from them.
They clearly haven't worked out, that I'm not going to be responding, as they keep on sending them.0 -

What they are is Commission Salesmen.
As such, they are cold callers, much they same as double glazing/kitchen salesmen, or the bloke from a telecoms company, trying to flog you broadband.
Simply ignore them, and shut the door.
Don't speak to them, don't answer their questions (if you really can't resist speaking to them, ASK the questions, eg. "Who are you?"), and, above all DON'T SIGN ANYTHING.
It is the communicating and signing, which will lead to you being summonsed to court. It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0 -
I am a long-term lurker on this and other threads in Old Style.
I know a number of you were concerned about HSCIC and the collection of care data from NHS records and were planning to opt out.
I have just found something which I think is different although I haven't read enough about it yet but thought I would give you the heads up. It is called General Practice Extraction Service (GPES). The GPES project will allow for the extraction of medical data from patient records in order to enhance patient care. The bit I have read says that the data is confidential and cannot be identified. However, it also says that "In most cases, the information extracted by GPES will not reveal an individual's identity" (My bolding and italics.)
It is being carried out by HSCIC which is the group that were involved in care data so whether this is the same by another name or whether it is something different I don't know
Here is the link to the info http://www.hscic.gov.uk/gpes
If anyone finds out any more perhaps they will post up what they find.
This is not more on that specific link, but more on the same subject. This morning I received an email from the organisation 38 Degrees:
"It seems that private companies are helping to decide the future of the NHS.
A lobbying company working for some of the worlds biggest drugs and medical equipment companies was paid by NHS England to write an influential report. It’s claimed that the report could help shape the next five years of NHS strategy. [1]
The NHS is owned by all of us, but NHS England - the body that runs the NHS in England - doesn’t have to publish details of the lobbyists they meet with. If enough of us kick up a stink right away, we could force them to come clean about who’s deciding the future of our NHS. The people who run NHS England aren't used to having the spotlight on them.
Please can you sign the petition to demand that we can see who’s deciding the future of our NHS?
https://secure.38degrees.org.uk/NHS-lobbying-transparency"
I've signed and said I'd pass it on to others.
Here's The Independent's article http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/revealed-big-pharma-links-to-nhs-policy-with-senior-mps-saying-medical-industry-uses-wealth-to-influence-government-9120187.html0 -
Actually, after I gave up my firearms and shotgun certificates I did have to go through some fairly stringent checks to confirm that I'd given up my guns.
They didn't do that with me.
I didn't hear a word from them.
Also, I'm guessing they don't write to you every 2 years, asking you to confirm, that you haven't acquired some more guns?0
