We had camping gaz stoves, lanterns and plenty of candles so were well prepared.

We didn't have camping stoves, but we did have a coal fire, so we could cook basics, like soup, sausages, beans, egg and bacon, and of course toast.

We had only candles (and not very many of them) for lighting.

BB - thanks for the summary of action needed on the TV licence

    You're welcome.
I hadn't thought about the edited register - criminals are always going to use that, aren't they :(

Including some of the, less annoying, criminals than TVL. :D

Our family only had a double stove, and one lantern. We also had a gas cooker so were okay on that score, so we actually lent the camping stove to an aunt who only had electric.
It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.

hello fellow preppers..... bit of a dilemma.... got an old 2 gig laptop....my mate whose on the dole... his computer has broken... and asked me if i had an old one.... however i use it as a back up computer and even if i restored to factory settings... it is still possible to recover files...online passwords etc...not that i think he would... but if he passed it on? what i may do is partition the drive(vista at present) and put linnux on it if it works may swap out hard drive (good practice) and lend him that. what is classic shell ? a kind of emulator? next stop google how to change laptop hard drive..........might up my tinned purchases ..as times become more uncertain....most of us are ahead of the curve anyway
    take care
  • Classic Shell is a small program, which provides a different GUI.

It makes Win 8 behave like an earlier Win version.

If you have the means to restore or install an operating system, then download DBAN. It will wipe a hard drive to or beyond US Department of Defense standards (three complete overwrites of 1s and 0s) which is as good as anything needed.
Changing hard drives is fairly easy on most laptops.

Germany is building 10 new coal fired power stations, while the UK has decided to go for early decommissioning. It has to be cheaper and more environmentally friendly to build coal rather than nuclear generators (not to mention faster and safer).

Trying to catch up on this thread, been a while...
Glad to see Pineapples's thing is a nothing.
Not done a huge amount prep wise recently, but did get DH to let me practise changing a wheel. I already knew how but good to have a proper go. Never know when you may need that skill...
Bought a mince/sausage maker as our sheep (we bought into one and help with the flock) went to slaughter this week, plus we hope to do pig sharing again this year and this will save us on the butchery.
DH is being roped into helping with the sheep castrating... interesting skill to learn there!

Karl Denninger is a big fan of thorium reactors, and from what he mentions about the possibility of using the waste products to produce diesel, they sound ideal:

Why one earth aren't we developing these in the UK?
