The one thing about coal is that it's here, not in a pipeline wandering all over Russia and the Ukraine and several other countries and then under the sea to this island. And coal brings jobs and money. And other countries are using clean coal technology but this country is too busy amassing wealth for the higherups to bother with it.0

I found out last week, to my glee, that when my brother and sister and I were babies in the 1950s, my mum did indeed bath us in a tin bath in front of the fire
Gosh, what a pampered childhood! The best I ever got when I was really small was the Belfast sink in the kitchen
Things got better as I got older though and I graduated to the (proper) bath. And sometimes in the winter, when it was freezing hard and there was ice on the inside of the window, Mother relented and provided heating - by means of a one-bar electric fire with the rusty reflector on the floor maybe four feet from the bath, plugged into the two-pin socket in the bedroom next door.
In later life, as I realised how much improved Mother's life would have been if I wasn't around, I often wondered about that - and a few other things ...
Anyhow, ref power stations - if they were to build coal-fired ones, where would the coal for them come from? We're all doomed0 -
We have tons and tons of coal under the ground. But it would need money to open up pits again and the miners are all older now. LOL story of the UK in a nutshell eh - chaos!0

If you have, you and me both, pet. I was cracking up at how sheepish The Wiz was that he might have passed me hand, foot and mouth disease just by being in the same room fixing my pooter. It occurred to me at the time that a version of the conversation must have happened in some other woman's life about some rash in a more intimate area. Then I looked up this virus on the interwebs and found that it occasionally causes rashes on the gentials and I was roaring with laughter........:rotfl:
As they used to joke in the pre-AIDS days Friday night on the town, Monday morning in the clap clinic.
Been offline since Saturday night due to being busy with this business called RL (and that'll have to stop). Lovely weather has seen me crack on with the gardening and some sewing projects, and reading nearly all of an engrossing novel.
Plus lots of phone calls, I've been little miss popularity this weekend. Peeps, if my landline is engaged, it's likely to be because I'm using it and therefore not available on my mobile........we got there in the end. Social callers have even been rocking up at the allotment. Then and CIS. They're taking this latest round of allotment break-ins pretty seriously.
There's been livestock thefts, about 50 chickens, plus their feed, from several plots, and bunnies. Some of the geezers are about to implode with rage and there's talk of lying in wait for them overnight. Some are suggesting citizen's arrests and some are suggesting baseball bats.
Me, I'm at home at night but anyone who catches one can have a drink on me. 50 bliddy chickens, that's not kids, that's organised banditry. Folks are upset because nearly all of them are rescues and have been nursed from poor condition and emotionally traumatised states into happy and well-adjusted chickenhood and now they are gawdknowswhere..........
Always opt out of the Edited Register, btw, as otherwise any herb can rock up to your council and view the published register. And it's sold to marketting companies. I take several calls per year from people wanting to know if Person X lives in our city or our council homes and they've livid to be told that we can't release that information.
There are some people in this sleepy backwater who have good reasons for being off the beaten track, and I think everyone can benefit from being a bit chary about their name and address.

Did anyone check out that programme last year in which they ask people in a cul de sac in NE Scotland to cut their energy consumption?
The aim was to get it down by 30% but most families acutally managed 50% reductions, with the family with the lowest usage previously managing the largest reduction.
Big savings came from draught proofing, round pipe inlets and outlets, joins between floors and walls, ceilings and walls etc.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -

If anyone wants a set of 2 rectangular nesting mess tins with handles (I use mine to make soda bread in on top of the woodstove) they have them in B & M for £2.99 and the quality looks OK too.0

Maybe look to increase the amount of bottled/stored water that you keep in before it happens. Most other things will be copeable with if uncomfortable. I'd really miss the ease of contact this computer gives me too, it would be a smaller and less companiable world.
Another reminder Lyn that preppers come from all walks of life eh? Im with you in your thinking of back up plans to try to make hiccups that bit more easier/achievable. Im in the same camp in that I think small, I think bunker down, I think prep in and around my home and i think I shall give us the best chance of coping. My mind wont allow me to go big or think along the lines of what if/what is the point... if such and such comes it wont be any use anyway. Any prep is better than nothing... especially knowledge. This is where I think the freezer running down advice is super because it is what I do anyway. As Lyn will probably remember I lost a whole month worth of meat and my frozen stocks of milk when my freezer played silly b*ggars. To this day I dont use it as food storage passed a week, maybe a few extras hiding in there - but definitely not relied upon come SHTF of any kind.
Words such as Lyns are so important for people lurking and just starting out in all this. Running down a freezer is achievable and a great starting point in budgeting for running up other kinds of food stocks (using up and using the saved money buying into dried/tinned/water etc)
I think we should never lose sight of OS in prepping because the OS way can be achieved by everyone... as long as there is knowledgeWe have tons and tons of coal under the ground. But it would need money to open up pits again and the miners are all older now. LOL story of the UK in a nutshell eh - chaos!
Imagine the uproar in smokeless zones - folks had to get rid of their open fires because the super world of gas arrived to the masses. Big modern monstrosities adorning hearths. Big up for progress eh?0
